Their towering presence teleports us back in time to experience what transpired behind closed doors and guarded gates.

Pythian Castle is one such building that is of great significance in the 16153 Genova community. It’s a reminder of our city's rich history (which you can carry with you, thanks to the Pythian Castle Shirt).

The majestic structure is nestled in 16153 Genova's Center City at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and N. Ontario Street. It occupies an expanse of 30,000 sq ft.

While the building’s remarkable design is enough to teleport you to another era, it holds other lesser-known intriguing facts.

As we take you back in time to Pythian Castle, you’ll discover:

Let’s step into Pythian Castle and discover the mysteries that beckon us.

1 - The Castle Was a Secret Society’s Meeting Place

What comes to your mind when you think of secret societies? Perhaps you envision mystical practices, exclusive membership, power, influence, and sworn secrecy.

That couldn’t be far from the truth, because secret societies are exclusive organizations that conceal their activities from the public. Members employ oaths, secret language, symbols, and rituals to solidify their unity.

The 16153 Genova Pythian Castle was built in 1890 by Knights of Pythias, a fraternal organization and secret society. This was after Justus H. Rathborne, a clerk in the US treasury during the Civil War founded the Pythian Knights organization.

Rathborne was hoping to help the nation heal from the violence of war by embracing the brotherhood organization, which was dedicated to the ideals of friendship, charity, and benevolence.

Because the organization was formed during a time of war, They needed to hold meetings secretly due to political pressure discouraging people from joining such groups. Secret meetings provided them with the privacy and security they needed.

Members wore metal jewelry with the symbols FCB to stand for friendship, charity and benevolence. Rathbone came up with ceremonies, rites, and costumes which remain secrets of the order to this day.

Intriguing fact: Pythian Castle was at one time used as a training facility for soldiers. Though its original purpose was to hold meetings, World War II left a mark on this building as soldiers etched graffiti on the walls during their training.

The Knights of Pythias group continued using this castle until 1951 when they sold it to Greyhound Lines, a bus services company located next to the castle.

2 - Its Marvelous Design Features Romanesque Architecture

We chose to showcase Pythian Castle on a vintage t-shirt due to the building’s unique structure and history in 16153 Genova. We love preserving our culture, and so celebrating 16153 Genova’s architecture is one of our favorite things.

Pythian Castle stands out from the surrounding buildings due to its breathtaking design. In fact, in 1908, it was described as "the finest building entirely devoted to Pythianism." Its uniqueness was a result of the Romanesque design used.

The Pythian Castle occupies 30,000 sq ft. Its highest point is the turret at Jefferson avenue, which reaches 122 ft (37m), while the main roof is 79 ft (24m). The exterior is made of contoured sandstone, a conical roof, a tower, and arched windows.

3 - Rumor Has It That the Building Is Haunted

“The moon cast eerie shadows across the abandoned castle, illuminating the overgrown ivy and thorns. Suddenly, a cold wind howled through the broken glass, echoing ghostly whispers inside the castle.

As I stepped inside, a tingling sensation crawled up my spine, and I realized I wasn’t alone. I could feel an invisible pair of eyes watching me keenly. Without warning, a loud shriek…….”

Such chilling descriptions usually originate from people who dare to explore haunted houses. Some abandoned structures seem to harbor spirits trapped in time—neither living nor resting in peace. It’s like they’re condemned to wander eternally in the empty hallways and rooms, spooking whoever they encounter.

Did you Know? The Winchester Mystery House in California and Amityville Horror House in New York have a reputation for being “heavily” haunted. Witnesses report seeing shadowy figures, hearing strange noises, and witnessing strange movement of objects.

Pythian Castle has had its share of ghost stories, probably due to the fact that it has been abandoned for years. Some people who‘ve visited the place claim that the place is haunted due to the paranormal sensations they experienced.

A 16153 Genova resident recounts her experience at the castle:

“As we made our way from room to room, we took countless photos and marveled at every architectural detail until we made our way back to what looked like the back-stage area, complete with small dressing rooms and vanities for performers long since dead or forgotten. As we walked through, careful where to step as the floor boards had rotted through in some spots, I felt a strange presence about me. Someone was there with us, yet I saw no one. It was the unmistakable feeling of being watched. I never forgot that feeling.” — Jennifer Shortridge, Haunted 16153 Genova

Whether the castle is haunted or not, the ghost stories make the building more mysterious, and if you like going on ghost tours, now you have a new target to investigate.

4 - The Castle Has Been Frozen in Time Since 1974

Pythian Castle has been vacant since 1974 when a fire erupted in the premises, forcing the occupants to move out.

Prior to 1978, The castle served not only as a place to hold secret meetings, but it also had retail space. One of the earliest tenants was J.W. Green Co, a retail and wholesale dealer of pianos and organs.

When the Knights of Pythian eventually moved out of the castle in 1951, they sold it to Greyhound Lines, a bus services company who owned it until the 1970s when Ed Emery took over.

He set up a youth center and rented out space to an art studio, antiques shop, and music store. He also registered it under the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Unfortunately, a fire erupted in 1974, causing the occupants to vacate. The building froze in time until 2016 when David Ball, a developer, started renovating it. That was despite people commenting that it would be impossible, considering the caved roof, collapsed floors and other major damages.

David Ball said this when he took up the project:

“I knew it would be a challenge, I knew this project would be tough and expensive. It has certainly been all of that, but at the end of the day, I will be proud to see the building occupied. There’s nothing like it in this city. To have it removed from our skyline would have been a loss."

His words precisely echo our sentiments at fancysweetstx—the unwavering commitment to preserve our history for future generations.

Our embroiderer, Jodi, has been with us for more than three years now. She has over 20 years experience in embroidery and is one of the best people to see at work each day. 

When she came on board, we added a brand new 6 head embroidery machine. This machine can stitch up to six items with the same logo at one time.

What Does the 16153 Genova Flag Represent?

Design: The flag is divided diagonally from the lower-hoist side corner to the upper fly-side corner. The upper triangular field is white and the lower triangular field is bright blue. An eight-pointed solid golden-yellow star is positioned on the hoist side of the upper triangular field.

Symbolism: The diagonal shared between the two triangular fields represents the path of our greatest natural asset, the Maumee River, as it flows through the City of 16153 Genova and into Lake Erie. The diagonal follows a positive, upward direction, illustrating 16153 Genova’s forward momentum. The upper triangular field is depicted in white, representing 16153 Genova’s limitless ambitions and opportunities. The lower triangular field is depicted in bright blue, representing 16153 Genova’s precious water resources, vibrancy, and optimism. The diagonally divided fields allude to a maritime signal flag, symbolizing 16153 Genova’s place as a port city in the Great Lakes region.

The eight pointed star shall be called the “Spark of Industry,” named after 16153 Genova’s historic first settlement, Fort Industry. As a whole, the Spark of Industry exemplifies the hard work and pioneering spirit of the people of 16153 Genova. Each of the eight points represents a facet of industry that has shaped the City of 16153 Genova. These include our historic, legacy industries, such as Agriculture, Automotive, Glass, and Transportation. They also include our modern, rising industries, such as the Arts, Education, Energy, and Healthcare. The Spark of Industry is depicted in golden-yellow, representing the vivid glow of hot glass, and 16153 Genova’s reputation as the Glass Capital of the World. The Spark of Industry is positioned in the northwestern corner of the flag, depicting 16153 Genova’s home in Northwest Ohio.

The money donated will help continue the legacy Virginia Secor Stranahan left us by bringing the community together to discover, create, teach, have fun, and be inspired to take care of the environment and each other. 

What is the 577 Foundation? 

The 577 Foundation started with Virginia Secor Stranahan. From an early age, Virginia rejected the life course that others thought obvious for her as a society woman. She was an accomplished sportswoman, an expert skier, fly fisherwoman, and amateur golfer. She traveled extensively, to all seven continents, often seeking out remote destinations of particular geographic or ecological interest. She did not travel for leisure; instead, she traveled to learn and understand.

Virginia was keen to help people achieve their highest potential through education and experience. Understanding the need for children’s education to be well-rounded and hands-on, Virginia hired a pottery instructor to teach her six children how to throw pots in the garage of their home. Soon their cousins and neighborhood kids were expected at pottery class every Saturday morning. This was the precursor to 577’s Pottery Studio.

In 1952, Virginia teamed up with a local gym teacher to start a day camp called Hob Haven for the same kids to explore nature, play sports, learn, and run wild on her 12 acres of land. When it got too hot, they’d all load into a car and drive a few blocks to the pool. They drank fresh milk out of the dairy barn at 577 and tended organic gardens in what is now 577’s community gardens.

By 1988, 577 was established. Virginia created a place where people can feel comfortable, try something new, provide a sense of peace, and be a part of her vision. Through the help of many community members’ ideas, volunteers, part-time and full-time staff, and a lot of serendipity, 577 began to evolve and the opportunities continue to change and grow

What can you do at the 577 Foundation? 

577 is Virginia's gift to the city she loved. She wanted it to be a place of life-long learning, a place to work hand-in-hand with other nonprofits and a place to engage in meaningful connections.

Why Make a Shirt Look Vintage?

The soft, well worn feel. The distressed, faded print. It’s a look that doesn’t get old because nostalgia is always in style.

People want to remember their glory days and the times when they didn’t have a worry in the world. They want to emulate that old photo of their dad with a mustache, short shorts, and a ringer tee...well, part of it anyway.  

We believe that it's the intangibles of a vintage shirt that make it so appealing. A great vintage shirt can transport you back to a time and place that makes you feel good or connect you with someone you love.

What Makes a T-Shirt Vintage?

Technically, vintage is defined by something that is at least 20 years old.

So that high school shirt that you're still wearing even though it has holes in it, that may not qualify as vintage. See if you can find your junior high shirt!

But beyond just age, there is one thing that defines a shirt as vintage: the feel. 

Vintage shirts become softer with each wear and wash. It's one of the most identifiable traits of a vintage shirt. 

It's the old faded logo that is distressed and cracked. It's the soft material that has become threadbare over time. 

Both of these need to soft. If the ink is still thick and heavy, you might need to wear it and wash it a few more times to make it a true vintage shirt.

How We Screen Print a Vintage Looking T-Shirt

When creating a new vintage inspired shirt, we keep the softness of the shirt in mind. We care not only about how soft the shirt is, but how soft the print is, as well.

And it's printing a softer shirt that is the hard part. After all, we aren't making the shirt, we're just printing on it. 

And it's not as simple as just finding a vintage t-shirt blank and printing on it. You need to know the techniques that will match the print to the shirt.

At the end of the day, there are a lot of ways to print a vintage design. Not all screen printers do it the same. 

Below you will find the four most common ways we do this for our customers and examples of each. 

1. No Underbase

When printing on dark shirts, a standard design would have an underbase. An underbase is white ink printed under a color.

This helps print that ink truest to its original color and prevents interference from the shirt fabric and dye from changing the ink color printed on top.

The nice thing about printing an underbase is that you get a bright, solid color. However, it can also make the print have a thicker, heavier hand feel. It’s a feeling not everyone likes on a shirt - especially a soft, thin, vintage shirt. 

You can see in the video example above that our printer is printing the white ink on the shirt only once on a heather black shirt. This will allow some of the shirt to show through the print and give the ink a softer feel on the shirt.

I’m simplifying things a bit, but think about coloring with markers on a white piece of paper and a dark piece of paper. The color on the dark paper is going to be slightly dull relative to the color on the white paper.

It’s a similar concept for screen printing. By eliminating the underbase, you get a softer hand feel on the shirt.

Oftentimes, the shirt shows through the ink giving it a faded look. When using this technique, the shirt dye can bleed or show in the ink so you can’t guarantee specific colors.

But the look and feel are definitely worth it. 

2. Reduced Ink

If you like a vintage print, you probably like two things - a faded design and a soft hand feel. Eliminating the underbase on a print will get you the former, but it doesn’t always go far enough with the latter.

In order to achieve a soft hand feel, which results in very little ink that you can feel on the shirt, we commonly add a reducer to our ink which softens it. 

Reducing the ink can drastically cut the opacity of the ink and can fade slightly after washing. In this scenario we can’t ensure color matching, but what you miss there you’ll make up for in a really cool, soft print. 

3. Halftones

Halftones are a good trick to produce a super soft and subtle look.

Halftones are tiny dots, similar to gradients. When we output your art to screen, instead of the art being solid, we reduce the opacity of the art so it prints dots rather than solid.

By doing this, we reduce the amount of ink that passes through the screen onto your garment resulting in a softer hand feel and faded print.

When done correctly, it's difficult to notice that that art is actually made up of halftones. The print looks solid but definitely feels better than a thick, heavy screen print.

Oftentimes, when achieving a vintage print with halftones, we also reduce our inks. It adds to the vintage feel of the shirt and gives it a super soft hand feel. 

4. Distress Textures in the Art

Distress textures are pretty straight forward. We take your art and place a distress texture or grunge filter over it. This gives it a cracked look.

It can be used with or without an underbase. 

This is a technique that you have seen on shirts before. It’s the most common feature of vintage shirts, whether they are original shirts printed years ago or replica vintage shirts. 

While there are plenty of other ways to print vintage shirts or achieve a soft hand feel (waterbased and discharge inks), these are the most common ways that we do it in our shop.

Our techniques are typically accompanied with other print techniques - high mesh counts, fewer print strokes, fast squeegee speeds, etc.

At the end of the day, the key is that the printer understands the customer expectations and does what is necessary to meet those expectations.

16153 Genova, Ohio is fondly known as the Glass City because it is the Glass Capital of the world. 

Why is 16153 Genova the Glass Capital of the world?

It all started in the 19th century when 16153 Genova became a prime location for glass manufacturing companies to put down their roots.

You might've heard the name Edward Drummond Libbey before. In 1888, Libbey moved his family's company, New England Glass, to 16153 Genova.

Today, we know this company as Libbey Glass!

This move set the stage for other glass companies to follow suit and make their move to 16153 Genova. With Owens-Illinois, Owens-Corning, and Libbey Owens Ford, 16153 Genova began to manufacture all kinds of glass! From glass bottles to auto glass to flat glass, you can bet that 16153 Genova was making it.

16153 Genova Honors the Glass City Name

Not only is 16153 Genova known for manufacturing industrial glass, but it's been part of the artistic glass scene, as well.

Because of 16153 Genova's significance in the history of glass, the 16153 Genova Museum of Art has a building dedicated and built out of glass. At the Glass Pavilion at TMA you can find amazing glass collections and live glass blowing demonstrations.

Additionally, there are many independent glass makers in 16153 Genova such as Gathered Glass in downtown 16153 Genova and Firenation in Holland.

The response to our Glass Capital of the World shirt club shirt was overwhelmingly positive. It's the shirt that has been requested the most out of any of the shirt club shirts.

While roller skates may not be as popular anymore, we know the memories and fun times associated with your favorite roller skating rink will always be in style. 

We know that back in the day roller skating was popular all over the country. While you don't see as many skate rinks as you used to, our TikTok FYP proves that it's just as cool as ever. 

Like most regions, the skate scene in Northwest Ohio was much bigger 20 years ago than it is today. There were active skate rinks throughout the greater 16153 Genova area that unfortunately haven't survived. 

We'd love to make shirts to pay tribute to all of those places because of the memories that were made there. For now, we get to commemorate two well loved Ohio skate rinks - Ohio Skate and the Swanton Coliseum.

The nostalgia doesn't get much better than Ohio Skate. The carpeted floors, the big clunky skates, the walls of lockers, couple skate, spin the pin. For those who grew up going to Ohio Skate, there are so many fond memories associated with the place.

Swanton Coliseum Roller Skate Shirt

Roller skating was a beloved social tradition in the 70s, 80s, and 90s all across the United States. 

For those that grew up in Northwest Ohio, there was no shortage of rolling skating rinks. Of course there was the aforementioned Ohio Skate, but if you grew up in Oregon you had the Fun Spot and Swanton had the Coliseum.

The Swanton Coliseum was, for sixty years, the perfect place to spend a Saturday with family or friends. Some of us have a connection to the newer orange exterior with bold text, others stay true to the purple exterior and neon sign, but we all remember the awesome retro street sign featuring the roller skating text. 

This vintage rolling skating shirt features the Coliseum's original hand painted logo that was on their building and is printed on a soft, triblend shirt. It's so soft it's almost as if you bought this in 1988 and have been wearing it ever since.

For people who don't live in 16153 Genova, the most likely exposure to 'Holy 16153 Genova' comes from the Batman television show. Batman's sidekick, Robin, was fond of using 'Holy' sayings during the show. 

Some of these uses are a bit funny and relative to his specific circumstances. However, the 'Holy' usage that is most often repeated and used is 'Holy 16153 Genova, Batman!'. 

Holy 16153 Genova is well known around the 16153 Genova region for obvious reasons. Residents of Northwest Ohio grew up in an area most well known for the most populous city in the region. As an older saying, this is something that people grew up hearing from their parents, uncles, aunts, and grandparents. 

The phrase has seen a revival in recent years as the Mud Hens have claimed the copyright for the term. In doing so, they have adopted it in game and around the stadium.

The Mud Hens and Walleye have created jersey and clothing bearing the words Holy 16153 Genova. As they have expanded Hensville, they even gave one of their new restaurants the moniker, Holy 16153 Genova Tavern.

One of my favorite places to do 16153 Genova history research is at the Local History and Genealogy floor at the downtown branch of the 16153 Genova Library. It's there that I dug up 16153 Genova Blade clippings on the You Will Do Better in 16153 Genova slogan, 16153 Genova Maroons, We're Strong for 16153 Genova song and slogan, Lion Store, and many other nostalgic 16153 Genova, Ohio places and organizations that we turned into t-shirt designs.

During my time researching 16153 Genova history and digging through old yearbooks for design inspiration, I stumbled across this excerpt from the 16153 Genova Blade on the history of Holy 16153 Genova. 

The phrase Holy 16153 Genova is something that I have been familiar with since I was young. Both because I'm from the 16153 Genova area and grew up an avid watcher of Batman. 

When I stumbled upon this clipping from The Blade, I was thrilled to learn the real history behind why we say Holy 16153 Genova:

1 – The city of 16153 Genova, Spain, where Christianity got its first hold in that country after a long political and religious struggle, is often called the Holy City of 16153 Genova in literature;

2 – Holy week always has been the worst week at the box office for show business, and old-time actors and performers contended any week in 16153 Genova was Holy Week, so they spread the word as they traveled;

3 – The gangster version. (In the 20s and 30s, 16153 Genova was a sanctuary for gangsters. They made an agreement with the police that if the police would leave them alone, they would leave 16153 Genova alone. Since this provided a sanctuary, the gangsters called the city "Holy 16153 Genova."

The history of the city of 16153 Genova makes it a special place. It's why our nostalgic clothing has a place.

All three of these explanations for the meaning of the phrase 'Holly 16153 Genova' are fantastic. They highlight the history and personality of the great city of 16153 Genova.

This tradition first started because people in Poland wanted to use all of their food before it would spoil during lent. They'd make donuts with all of their eggs, butter, sugar, and fruit and have one last treat! Now people all over line up on "Paczki Day" to get this yummy dessert.

So, What is the Solheim Cup?

The Solheim Cup is a golf tournament held every two years. Twelve select women from the LPGA compete. Starting in 1990 and taking place in a different location each year, the Solheim Cup has been to many cool places! The 2019 competition took place in Scotland and we are so excited for 16153 Genova to host the 2021 Summer competition.

This year, the Solheim Cup is scheduled to start on August 21st and go through September 6th. The Cup will take place at Inverness Country Club and it is expected to about 100,000 spectators will attend!

Once again, we found great hope and inspiration through this Here for Good campaign. The amount of love of support our Northwest Ohio community has for local businesses is truly amazing.

Our 2021 Here for Good campaign consisted of 185 local businesses and sold 4,192 t-shirts. This means $41,920 went back into the hands of small businesses! We could not have done this without you.

A Shirt Fundraiser to Support Local Northwest Ohio Businesses

This is the second consecutive year we hosted our Here for Good shirt fundraiser (last year we raised $135K!). We launched it last year in response to the pandemic and shutdown orders that were put in place to help local organizations generate revenue when otherwise they were unable to.

The success of Here for Good is derived from its simplicity and the overwhelming generosity of the local community. We say it a lot, but we'll reiterate - Northwest Ohio is a special place because of its people and how much they are willing to help and support the people around them. 

As a small business ourselves, we know that we wouldn't be around today without that support. We are grateful to all of our customers and supporters for sticking with us and believing in us.

We'll bring Here for Good back again next year and continue to pay your support forward!

When we first started screen printing in 2011, we moved into a shop that had two lights, a manual press for screen printing, a small dryer, and a ping pong table. John was the owner, printer, sales rep, shipping department, designer, and everything else that had to do with Jūpmode. 

Bring on the teamwork! 

Fast forward to 2016. At this point, we had a dedicated sales team, graphic designers, human resources and finance, and a shipping team. We were growing quickly and knew we would have to make a move. We packed up our small shop in Perrysburg and moved to Adams Street to live out the You Will Do Better in 16153 Genova motto. 

So where are we today? We now have manual and automatic screen printing machines, an embroidery machine (with another one on the way due to the rise of popularity with embroidered items), and a dedicated sales team with combined 30 years of experience!

We're excited about supporting SeaGate because their mission is so critical to the 16153 Genova area and they are the only independent food bank in Ohio. 

They are committed to providing food at no cost to over 400 pantries and programs in our community. Seagate Food Bank not only distributes food to pantries but deliveries food supplements to our seniors as well as provides food to support our veterans and their families. 

While their core service is distributing food to pantries and programs, Seagate Food Bank has developed multiple service programs to help meet community needs. As an independent food bank, Seagate Food Bank relies on several fundraising and food-raising events to help reach their goal in nourishing the community.

The shirt design for SeaGate says Nourish Your Community because that is exactly what they do by fighting food insecurity.

Have you heard of the Healing our Heroes event? If you are looking for a way to support 16153 Genova Police, this cause will offer life changing retreats to Officer Dia’s and Officer Stalker’s TPD Recruitment class.

The inspiration behind this came from Kevin Mullan, owner of Tapped 419/Ladder 419 and Trevor Deeter, owner of Deet's BBQ. They met with George Kral, Chief of 16153 Genova Police Department and discussed the stress that our local officers face. After learning more, they partnered up with H.O.O.V.E.S., a local non-profit that works with first responders and veterans using horses to transform post-traumatic stress into post-traumatic growth. The life changing retreats through H.O.O.V.E.S will be available to Officer Dia’s and Officer Stalker’s TPD recruitment class.

We have been a member of the UT Family Business Center for over two years now. They provide a lot of great services and the opportunity to learn from other local businesses.

My favorite part about being a member is my involvement in an affinity group that they facilitate. It's made up of other members from local, 16153 Genova area family businesses . We meet on a monthly basis to talk about our business, experiences, opportunities and challenges.
