During a period of sacrifice, Pączki sprung up as proof of a people’s resilience, creativity, and sense of community.

A beloved pastry that has been a staple in Polish culture for centuries, Pączki (pronounced "pohnch-kee") continues to captivate the hearts and taste buds of many, especially during the annual Pączki Day celebrations on Fat Tuesday—the last day of indulgence before the Christian season of Lent.

Did You Know: The Lent season originally lasted 36 days, excluding Sunday.

In the Midwest U.S.A., the Pączki tradition has continued to thrive, spreading cheer across the entire region and inspiring widespread cross-cultural influence as it holds a special place in the hearts of the Polish-American community.

As we trace the roots of Pączki and how far the humble dessert has come, we'll explore:

  • The significance of Pączki in Polish and Midwestern cultures
  • Creative and meaningful ways to join in on the Pączki fun
  • Fun, mouthwatering recipes to try at home
  • Fantastic ways to keep the Pączki tradition alive in the Midwest, including unique gift ideas like fancysweetstx's Pączki t-shirts

The Pączki Tradition

What Is Pączki?

paczki

Imagine a donut crossed with a brioche, but with a richer, denser, chewier texture, and fewer crumbs. That's Pączki!

Pączki (singular Pączek, pronounced “pohnch-chek”) are traditional Polish pastries that are somewhat like donuts. They are traditionally made with butter rather than shortening and they’re less sweet than traditional American donuts.

Their deep-fried, sweet yeast dough is filled with various sweet fillings, such as fruit preserves, custard, curd, sweet cheese, or cream.

The most popular filling in Poland is plum jam or rosehip jam, but other fillings such as raspberry, apricot, Bavarian cream, and blueberry are also common.

The table below highlights the differences between the Pączki and donuts.

Characteristic Pączki Donuts
Dough Ingredients Often enriched with eggs and lard for a richer texture Typically simpler dough, usually without eggs or lard
Filling Traditionally filled with rose hip jam or plum preserve Can be filled or unfilled; common fillings include jelly, cream, or custard
Topping Typically covered with powdered sugar or a light glaze Can have a variety of toppings, like sugar glaze, chocolate, or sprinkles

The Significance of Pączki in Polish Culture

In Poland, Pączki are eaten on Fat Tuesday, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Christian season of Lent. Historically, they were a way of clearing the pantry of rich, forbidden foods (lard, eggs, sugar) before the lenten period of fasting and abstinence.

In the Midwest, where the Polish-American community is strong and vibrant, the love for Pączki is celebrated on Fat Tuesday to coincide with the festivities for Mardi Gras in the U.S.

This time-honored Polish tradition is an opportunity for families and friends to gather and enjoy these mouthwatering treats before the period of fasting and reflection begins.

Beyond bringing together the Polish-American community, Pączki Day has become a part of the region's cultural identity. Midwesterners and local businesses all find their own unique ways to celebrate the special day.

Midwestern to the core, we at fancysweetstx have our own unique way to celebrate our love for Pączki

Our Paczki Time Shirt and the I Love Paczki Shirt—featuring an image of the jam-filled pastry—are fun and creative ways through which we express our pride and love for this delectable pastry.

The Adaptation and Celebration of Pączki in the Midwest USA

As Polish immigrants made their way to the Midwest USA in the 1800s, they brought with them their cherished traditions, including the beloved Pączki.

Today, the Midwest U.S.A. boasts a thriving Polish-American community in the millions, that enthusiastically celebrates Pączki Day and embraces this delicious treat as a symbol of their cultural heritage.

Statistics: There are approximately 8.8 million self-identified Polish-Americans, which makes up 2.67% of the American population.

This enthusiasm has spread throughout the Midwest, turning Pączki Day into a beloved Midwestern tradition; a tradition we proudly celebrate here at fancysweetstx with our Pączki-themed shirts.

I Love Paczki Shirt

Many cities with significant Polish populations, such as Detroit, Chicago, and Cleveland, hold annual Pączki-centered festivals that draw crowds from near and far.

Attendees queue for hours to sample the delicious Pączki, while bakeries and bars in town create a festive atmosphere with free live music and even Pączki mascots.

One example of a fun Pączki-centered event is the Pączki Day 5K Run organized on the Saturday before Pączki Day in Hamtramck, Michigan.

Fun Fact: The goal of the 5K Run is to help residents make room to eat more Pączki.

Such events serve as a platform for the Polish-American community to share their rich culture and history with their fellow Midwesterners.

Pączki have thus become a symbol of Polish-American pride and unity, fostering a sense of belonging and cultural continuity in the Midwest U.S.A.

That’s why there’s hardly anything as Midwestern as our I Love Pączki Shirt. For us at fancysweetstx, as with every Midwesterner, loving Pączki is nothing but pure, unadulterated joy.

"Paczkishirt

I must say that this is a most comfortable t-shirt. Very soft blend of fabrics. A must for anyone who celebrates Paczki Day!"

Pączki's Impact on the Midwest USA

Pączki Day goes beyond simply having a good time. The Polish dessert has dug its roots deep in the warm Midwestern heart, and:

  • Defines the Polish-American identity: It has played a significant role in increasing the visibility and recognition of the Polish-American community. It has become a symbol of pride and unity for their culture and a means to share their heritage with others.
  • Shapes local cuisine: Many bakeries have responded to the growing demand for Pączki by including it in their offerings and creating their own unique spin on the traditional recipe—for example, grilled Pączki sliders with grilled kielbasa (polish sausage), brown mustard, and onion, or the Clevelander with sauerkraut and kielbasa.
  • Connects diverse cultures: Pączki Day events and festivals draw participants from various backgrounds to the Midwest U.S.A. and allow opportunities for conversation, understanding, and the cross-cultural sharing of customs.

Learn How to Make Your Own Pączki From Scratch

Pączki from Giuseppe's Italian Bakery in Eastpointe, MI

Making your own Pączki from scratch isn’t for the fainthearted. It’s a true labor of love that can be a way to help you and your family deeply appreciate the Pączki Day tradition.

As you rock your fancysweetstx Pączki tee to get in the mood, here are a few enjoyable recipes to get you started.

Traditional Pączki Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk scalded then cooled to 100–110 °F
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 2 large egg yolks, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • Zest of 1 lemon or orange (optional)
  • 4 cups vegetable oil, for frying
For the filling:
  • 1 cup fruit preserves or custard (e.g., raspberry, strawberry, plum, or rosehip preserves, or vanilla custard)

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5–10 minutes until the yeast becomes foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, melted butter, vanilla extract, and lemon or orange zest (if using). Add the yeast mixture and stir to combine.
  3. Gradually add the flour and salt to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms. You may need to use your hands to fully incorporate the flour.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour as needed.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1–2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  6. Once the dough has risen, roll it out onto a floured surface to a thickness of about 1/2 inch. Use a round cookie cutter or glass (about 3 inches in diameter) to cut out circles from the dough. Re-roll the scraps and cut out additional circles until all the dough is used.
  7. Place the circles of dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover with a clean cloth, and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
  8. While the dough is rising, heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or Dutch oven to 350°F. Use a candy or deep-fry thermometer to ensure accurate temperature.
  9. Carefully fry the dough circles in batches, about 1–2 minutes per side, until they are golden-brown. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  10. Let the Pączki cool slightly before filling.
  11. To fill the Pączki, use a pastry bag fitted with a long, thin tip or a syringe. Fill the bag or syringe with your chosen fruit preserve or custard. Insert the tip into the side of each Pączki and gently squeeze in the filling until the Pączki feels plump.
  12. Dust the filled Pączki with powdered sugar before serving.
  13. Enjoy your old-fashioned Pączki!

Pączki traditional Polish dessert

Midwest American Pączki With Peanut Butter & Jelly Filling

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 2 cups whole milk, lukewarm
  • 4 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast (2 packets)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

For the filling:

  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1 cup jelly or jam (grape, strawberry, or raspberry)

For frying and coating:

  • Vegetable oil (for deep frying)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the lukewarm milk, active dry yeast, and one tablespoon of granulated sugar. Allow the mixture to sit for 5–10 minutes, or until frothy.
  2. Add the remaining sugar, flour, egg yolks, salt, vanilla extract, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5–7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for one-two hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and roll it out to about 1/2-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Using a round cookie cutter or a glass, cut out circles from the dough.
  6. Place the cut-out dough circles on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let them rise for an additional 30–45 minutes, or until they have slightly puffed up.
  7. While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. In two separate piping bags, fill one with peanut butter and the other with jelly or jam. Set aside.
  8. In a deep fryer or a heavy-bottomed pot, heat the oil to 350°F (175°C). Carefully lower a few dough circles into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pot.
  9. Fry the Pączki for 2–3 minutes on each side, or until golden-brown. Use a slotted spoon to remove the Pączki from the oil and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  10. While the Pączki are still warm, roll them in granulated sugar to coat evenly.
  11. Once the Pączki have cooled slightly, use a small knife to create a small opening on the side of each Pączek. Insert the piping bags into the opening and fill each Pączek with peanut butter and jelly, alternating between the two fillings.
  12. Enjoy your Midwest American Pączki with Peanut Butter & Jelly filling immediately for the best taste and texture.

So, you’re deep into a game of euchre, battling for the win. The opposing team is dropping trump cards, but none are enough to claim victory. Then suddenly, the euchre gods smile down upon you and grant you an indomitable hand.

You smile at your partner, and they know victory is imminent as you declare that you're going alone. But wait, is that the right move? Should you really make the solo dash for the finish line, or might it be better to stick with your partner? Euchre is supposed to be a team game, after all.

You’re in luck because today, we answer these questions and more as we delve into euchre gameplay and strategies to figure out the best time to go alone. By the time we’re done, you’ll be able to:

  • Spot a winning euchre hand and make the best play to win
  • Assess the risk versus rewards of going solo in different scenarios
  • Make the best game calls for yourself and your partner

Let’s kick off your euchre winning streak with the easiest sign to go solo, that is ….

1 - When You Have an Unbeatable Hand

If you have five trump cards, consider going alone, especially if you have the Right.

There are only seven potential trump cards in a game of euchre, so having five guarantees you at least three tricks

If you find yourself in this situation, you can go alone, whether you have the Right or the Left

If you have the Right and five trump cards, the only things that can stop you are an over-trump or a protected Left. If you have the Left and five trump cards, the only things that can stop you are the Right, an over-trump, or a protected Ace

On the other hand, if your partner has the Right in the above situation, you’ll likely take all five tricks without your partner, as the highest card will be buried in their hand, and you have the Left.

But if the opposition has the Right, they’ll take a trick regardless of whether your partner plays with you, so you may as well go alone.

Expert Tip: If you have the lowest five trump cards, you’ll need either your partner or the Kitty to have both the Right and Left.

On the one hand, you have a guaranteed three tricks, but on the other, you take away the possibility that your partner will have the Right to cancel out an opponent's potential Left.

In such situations, you need to consider other factors such as the score and your table position

2 - When You Have Fewer Suits in Your Hand

hand of euchre cards

Generally, having fewer suits in your hand is better when playing euchre. For instance, if you have three guaranteed tricks but at least three or four suits, then it might be harder to go alone.

This is especially true if you don’t have any Aces in your off-suit cards because that means your opponent likely has them. If you have many off-suit cards, your opponent has a better chance of trumping them.

However, if you have only two suits, you’re more likely to take all the tricks or not receive help from your partner, so you should go alone.

For example, if you have a nine off-suit, which may seem weak, but also have the Ace of that suit, you can lead trump initially and bleed out everyone’s trump.

This way, the only thing that can stop you is if the opposition has two cards in that suit and does not discard one when the trump is being bled.

Expert Tip: If you have three guaranteed tricks, including the Right or Left, then you may consider going alone.

3 - When You Have Strong Off-Suit Cards

If you have weak off-suit cards, say Queens and lower, do not go alone. In this case, your partner may be able to help you because they might:

  • Have the Ace of your off-suit
  • Be void of that suit and be able to use their trump

This way, you may be able to earn two points for taking five tricks instead of only one point for taking three or four tricks.

On the other hand, if you have high off-suit cards, such as Aces or Kings, and three high trump cards, then it's time to declare, “pick it up, I’m going alone!” Aces are especially important because they can beat other high-ranking cards of the same suit.

But remember, going alone in euchre is riskier because you won't have the support of your partner, and if you fail to take enough tricks, you can lose more points than usual. But then again, high risk, high reward.

Expert Tip: Euchre is a game of information, so keep track of the cards that have been played. Use this information to make better decisions about which cards to play and which strategies to use.

4 - You Have the First Table Position

Going alone in euchre is a good strategy if you are in first position. This allows you to bleed trump straight off the bat, significantly reducing the chances of getting over-trumped. This neutralizes one of the best defenses the opposition may have to stop your loner hand.

It also reduces the chance of your opponent being able to use their trump cards to take tricks from you.

The second best position for going alone is when you’re the dealer. This protects you from being over-trumped on the first trick, as there will be no players after you.

However, this is not as strong a position as the first because you will not be able to lead with a trump card on the first trick. As such, you may have to use a trump card to take a trick instead of bleeding out cards.

But then, this will open up the possibility of having your suit card trumped.

Expert Tip: In the second position, there’s an advantage to keeping your partner because they may be able to over-trump a player who’d otherwise trump your Ace. However, this minimal advantage must not factor heavily into your decision to go alone.

Bonus: Keep an Eye on the Up Card

Better in 16153 Genova Playing Card Deck

Always pay attention to what the Up Card is, whether it’s picked up or not—this refers to the card that's turned up after the dealer deals the first four cards.

If you plan to order a Right Bower, there’s little reason to go alone because your opponent will automatically have one trick. Keeping your partner and working together to obtain three tricks is a better play.

If the Right Bower is turned down, it may become the Left Bower of another suit, potentially making the loner's hands in that suit stronger. Additionally, if an Up Card Ace is turned down, that makes the King of that suit the highest card.

Note: The impact of Up Cards varies depending on the specific circumstances of the game. It's important to consider the strength of your hand and your opponent's defense before deciding on whether to go alone or keep your partner.

The table below shows a summary of factors to consider when going alone in euchre.

Factor Pros Cons
Having an unbeatable hand Increase chances of winning all five tricks Risk of opponent over-trumping
Having fewer suits in your hand Opportunity to take all the tricks and prevent your opponent from winning Losing potential help from partner
Opponent’s trump cards (if they have Right or Left Bower) Increased chance of winning all five tricks Risk of opponent over-trumping
Table position (first position) Potential to control the game Risk of opponent over-trumping

At fancysweetstx, we’re all about the Midwest. We make apparel and gifts that celebrate the region’s landscapes, culture, and charm. There’s nothing we love more than a classic turn of phrase that reminds us of all the people and things we appreciate in our special slice of America.

Today, we’re embracing nostalgia and recounting our favorite Midwestern sayings.

Here’s what you’ll learn in this pleasant stroll through the language of our people:

  • 9 sayings that delight Midwesterners and confuse outsiders
  • Fun facts and origin stories behind Midwestern slang
  • Where to find Midwestern-themed apparel that features your favorite regional phrases

1 - Ope!

Ope, meaning “oops” on a black and white unisex shirt from fancysweetstx

Ope!

You won’t find the Midwestern use of this little word in standard dictionaries, even though it’s uttered countless times every day throughout the region. Ope may have originally evolved from “oops,” but it grew into the Midwest’s trademark utterance.

Ope is a mild apology, an expression of surprise, and an all-purpose filler word. Ope is especially useful after making unintentional contact with someone, as in “Ope, didn’t see you there!” or for avoiding such contact, as in “Ope, let me just scooch past ya.”

Of course, catchy words like Ope tend to filter into all sorts of situations and conversations. These days, you won’t often complete a day in the Midwest without hearing a few opes.

2 - Knee High by the 4th of July

gray “knee high by the 4th of July” shirt

Corn makes the world go round, and the world can thank the Midwest. Iowa and Illinois combine to produce around one-third of the entire US corn crop

It’s no surprise that there’s some special Midwest lingo with corn-based origins. Among corny sayings, none is catchier than “knee high by the 4th of July.”

The phrase refers to a corn crop reaching knee-high length by the midsummer holiday. For prior generations of farmers, that was considered a good sign.

These days, corn grows faster and taller. Today’s Midwest corn farmers shoot for “corn as high as an elephant’s eye.” However, “knee high by the 4th of July” will always be fun to say, and it’s a cultural catchphrase that’s known throughout the rural Midwest.

3 - You Betcha!

Do Minnesotans have the world’s most delightful accent? Oh sure, you betcha!

The “betcha” is a mashup of “bet you.” So, technically, that second “you” is redundant, but hey, who’s counting? It’s a delightful phrase that turns a simple “yes” into a cheerful show of solidarity.

4 - Pick It Up, I’m Going Alone

gray and white “pick it up, I’m going alone” shirt

If you’ve ever said “pick it up, I’m going alone” then there’s a darn good chance you hail from the Midwest.

Midwesterners know that this cheeky phrase comes from Euchre, the classic card game that’s known by all in the Midwest, yet nearly invisible in other regions.

Euchre has been bringing Midwest families and friends together for generations. Like any great game, Euchre is rich with slang and catchphrases.

At fancysweetstx, we love putting Euchre lingo on t-shirts. The phrases are like secret flags to other Midwesterners. See below for a few of our favorite Euchre-themed designs.

Ah, the Midwestern goodbye. Kids grow up thinking the outrageously slow process of concluding social gatherings is unique to their own quirky families. However, the phenomenon occurs throughout the Midwest.

Some say the Midwestern goodbye occurs in a series of stages. The walk to the door, the hugs, the doorway chat, and so on.

We’ve all occasionally wished a Midwestern goodbye could wrap up more quickly. However, an extended goodbye is a sign of affection, and most Midwesterners have a soft spot in their heart for the folks who drag out their goodbyes the longest.

we make apparel and gifts that celebrate region's culture

6 - Schnookered

Wasted? Hammered? Trashed?

Those terms are rather crude, aren’t they?

The Midwest has its own preferred adjective for describing someone who’s had one too many “brewskis” (another regional gem). That word, schnookered, is perfectly goofy, charming, and Midwestern.

7 - The Cold Builds Character

blue “the cold builds character” unisex shirt from fancysweetstx

In the classic comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, Calvin asks his dad why they can’t turn up the heat. He replies, “Consuming less fuel is better for the environment and it saves money.”

He pauses while Calvin considers this response, then follows up with “... and being cold builds character.”

It’s no surprise that the strip’s author, Bill Waterson, was raised in Ohio and based his “character building” jokes on his own Midwest upbringing.

When it comes to building character, there’s nothing like cold weather. Turn up the thermostat on a frigid evening? Midwestern parents know better—never let the kiddos miss out on a chance to build character.

8 - If I Had My Druthers…

You’ve heard people talk about having their druthers, and maybe you’ve uttered this odd phrase yourself. But did you know that the phrase comes from “would rather”?

An early usage by Mark Twain in his novel Tom Sawyer, Detective sheds light on the phrase’s evolution:

“Any way you druther have it, that is the way I druther have it,” says Huck Finn to Tom. Tom replies: “There ain’t any druthers about it, Huck Finn; nobody said anything about druthers.”

Today, the word “druthers” is generally only used as part of the entire phrase “if I had my druthers.” It means “if I had my way.”

Talking about how things would be if you had your druthers is a politely Midwestern way of noting how things aren’t quite as they should be and that they might be better if you were in charge.

Farmers believed that if the crop reached the height of your knee by midsummer, it meant a bountiful harvest. Because of how popular this saying is, at fancysweetstx, we have our very own Knee High by the 4th of July T-shirt.

Today you’ll learn:

  • Why this phrase resonates with Midwesterners
  • Origins of the phrase “knee-high by the 4th of July
  • Where you’ll likely find this phrase used
  • Whether this old adage is still relevant today

1 - It’s Nostalgic and Symbolizes an Important Day

gray T-shirt on grass with words “knee high by the 4th of July” on top of single cob of corn

It’s a Reminder of Home

We move away from home for various reasons. It could be for school, to pursue a dream, or even to seek specialized healthcare. That doesn’t mean you can’t carry a piece of home with you.

The phrase “knee-high” is one that only Midwesterners and fans of the Midwest understand. Think of it as a club with a secret password. If you’re far from home and are wearing a “knee high” T-shirt, it makes it easy for other Midwesterners to identify with you.

It’s cool when a fellow Midwesterner strikes up a conversation with you simply because they can tell, from what you’re wearing, that you’re from back home. fancysweetstx has a cool selection of Midwesterner apparel and gifts, including a bushel of corn shirts, making it easy for other Midwesterners to connect with you.

Additionally, our selection makes great gifts for people who aren’t necessarily from the Midwest but are fans of the region.

Offers Great Memories of Knee-High Corn Celebrations

Even though “knee-high by the 4th of July” is no longer the standard to determine whether crops will produce high yields, it’s still a memorable phrase that brings Midwesterners together.

Back then, when your corn was knee-high by the time Independence Day rolled by, it was a cause for celebration because it meant a bountiful harvest. This still holds true for older folk who continue to take the knee-high adage more seriously.

So, even though crops today are taller than knee-high, it remains a cause for celebration as a decades-old tradition.

fancysweetstx knee high by the 4th of July photo snippet

The Midwest Is Home to the Corn Belt

The Midwest is large, spans over 12 states, and is popular for a reason: It’s home to the Corn Belt. The Corn belt is the area in the US that has dominated corn production for the past century and a half. Altogether, the Corn Belt produces over 15 billion bushels of corn every year.

These massive figures indicate corn growing in the Corn Belt yields three times more corn than countries like Mexico! This is something Midwesterners are proud of.

Whether you’re from the Land of Lincoln (Illinois), the Great Lakes State (Michigan), the Sunflower State (Kansas), the North Star State (Minnesota), the Buckeye State (Ohio), or any of the other states that make up the Corn Belt, the knee-high adage is one Midwesterners connect to.

Coincides With Independence Day

Even if you’re not from the Midwest, you still have a reason to celebrate! The 4th of July is America’s Independence Day. So whether you have fields of healthy corn, you can still celebrate America’s independence from Great Britain in 1776.

2 - It Tells People Where You’re From

“Knee-high by the 4th of July” relates to farming, specifically corn. People likely to understand or use this phrase will be from the Midwest or corn-growing regions, including Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Nebraska, Missouri, southern Michigan, Kansas, and Minnesota.

3 - It Has Historical Significance for Midwesterners

No one can pinpoint when farmers started using the phrase. However, there’s a possibility that it may be as old as Iowa, dating back to 1846. Early evidence depicts knee-high corn in a newspaper dating back to July 3, 1884.

The Sumner Gazette stated, “It has been considered that if corn was knee high by the Fourth of July that the crop was sure and safe”. To date, Iowa remains one of the top-producing corn states in the country. Combined with Illinois, the two states account for roughly one third of the country’s corn.

Is Knee High by the 4th of July Still Relevant Today?

dark gray T-shirt with words “lil Midwesterner” in large font

Every year, on the 4th of July, farmers celebrate Independence Day and a successful crop with the same spirit as generations before them. However, do farmers still view a knee-high crop as successful?

With today’s agricultural advancements, if your crop is knee-high by the 4th of July, it spells trouble for you. Modern technology has allowed for faster-growing corn and higher yields, allowing crops to grow taller than knee-high by late June or early July. Despite that, the popular phrase continues to stay alive among corn-growing folk in the Corn Belt.

The table below shows the differences between modern-day farming and 19th Century farming.

Modern-Day Farming 19th Century Farming
Improved agricultural technology, such as harvest automation and the use of drones Crude farming techniques such as oxen and wooden plows
Corn varieties resistant to pests and diseases, such as Luscious TSW F1 and Cameo Poor quality corn varieties susceptible to diseases, such as gray leaf spot and Northern corn leaf blight
Improved weather forecasting for accurate preparation, planting, and harvesting Relied on the four seasons to determine when to plant and harvest
Higher pest control efficiency Lack of advanced pesticides contributed to poor pest control leading to low yields

Looking at the table above, you can understand why knee-high corn is no longer considered a good crop. In the past few decades, seed companies have developed hybrid corn seeds that allow corn planting in cool weather.

Additionally, hybrid corn seeds offer the following advantages:

  • Disease and drought resistance
  • Produce plants with higher yields
  • Faster and easier to grow
  • Faster adaption to stress
  • Longer shelf life

In fact, according to the Iowa Corn Growers Association, with good growing conditions, corn should be at least 8 feet tall by Independence Day. The right growing conditions include:

  • Warm sunny weather that is anywhere between 75–86° F
  • High-quality seeds
  • Well-distributed moderate rains
  • A minimum of 120 frost-free days

Keep the Old Adage Alive in Our High-Quality Fun T-Shirts

Just because farmers no longer celebrate knee-high corn as a successful crop, it doesn’t mean you can’t keep the saying alive. It’s still a comforting thing to say from one Midwesterner to another.

Pair a “knee high by the 4th of July” T-shirt with this Ope! Denim Hat as a cool homage to this great region.

Our high-quality T-shirts and cool merchandise are a hit in the Midwest.

“Always a great experience with fancysweetstx! Quality shirts with awesome designs”.

So you spend an hour dodging the inevitable as you try to say your farewells? That's the premise of the famed Midwestern goodbye.

It starts with an indication that you’re about to leave, usually smacking your knees, standing up, stretching, then the words, “Welp, I/we should probably get going.”

The Midwestern goodbye ritual then ensues and can go on for anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.

One thing’s for sure, though: no Midwesterner can say goodbye without the long conversations, usually drawn-out small talk to put off getting out of the door.

Today we explore the intricacies of the Midwestern goodbye by looking at the:

  • Different stages of the Midwestern goodbye
  • Nuances of each step and how they lead to the next
  • Role of the goodbye ritual in Midwestern culture

In the end, you’ll understand why this intricate farewell is so integral to The Heartlands culture and be able to pull off the perfect Midwestern goodbye.

showcase Midwestern culture through apparel

Step 1 - The Stand and “Welp”

The beginning of every Midwestern goodbye starts with the stand and “Welp.” This indicates your intention to leave, thereby starting the Midwestern goodbye dance.

Note, however, that you won’t be getting out of there anytime soon.

The “Welp” merely serves as a gentle signal to everyone present that you must begin the process of leaving.

Step 2 - Everybody Gets a Hug

Next come the hugs, and everybody gets one, from the grandparents down to the youngest babies. Even the pets get a goodbye hug!

By far, this is one of the lengthiest steps of the Midwestern goodbye because Midwestern hugs carry the ongoing conversations and often include swaying and back-patting.

Related: Tell Me You're From the Midwest Without Telling Me You're From the Midwest

Step 3 - The Walk to the Door

After everyone has received their goodbye squeeze, the walk to the door begins. But this is not a speed walk towards the door. The pace to the door is usually dictated and steered by the ongoing conversation.

Every Midwesterner knows that no matter how close the door is, getting there will take no less than 20 minutes.

On your way there, you’ll talk about everything from how good the food was, to making plans for when you’ll meet next.

Step 4 - The Doorway Chat

Getting to the door takes a hot minute, but stepping through, you’ll find that's an entirely different undertaking, thanks to the doorway chat.

Here the conversation has no specific topic but is always punctuated with a lot of belly laughs. The chat can take anywhere from five minutes to forty-five minutes.

Expert Tip: If you need to, go to the bathroom before you try to leave. If not, you might have to start the goodbye process all over again.

Step 5 - “We Really Should Be Going”

This statement indicates the end of the doorway chat and the beginning of the descent to the car, and is often triggered by a child bursting into an impatient cry.

But this does not mean that you proceed immediately to your car—at least not yet. It signals the start of another critical step in the dance.

Step 6 - The Second Round of Hugs

About forty-five minutes since you started your exit, now probably with the sun quickly setting, the second round of hugs can begin.

This time, there is less talking but decidedly more back-patting and side-swaying. By this time, the goal is solely to get out the door, and you have your eye set on the prize—the door handle.

See Also: You Know You're From the Midwest When...

Step 7 - Foot Through the Door

You’re almost there, the doorknob in hand, but there’s yet another round of conversation to go still.

You cannot leave until someone bids you farewell in a way that sets off a fresh bout of belly laughs or a loved one starts quoting movies.

At this point, at least an hour will have passed, and you’ll have moved about 10 feet.

Step 8 - The Slow Open Door Conversation

You’re now making your way down the driveway, but it's not over yet. There’s yet another conversation about whatever may arise, perhaps some minor thing that had slipped someone's mind.

By now, it’s probably been at least long enough to digest the large Midwestern meal you just had and are thinking about a snack.

Depending on the season, an onslaught of mosquito bites or frostbite will soon end this step after a final round of quick hugs as you dive into your car.

Step 9 - The Front Porch Wave

Now that you’ve FINALLY made it out of the house and into your car, you can expect the famous Midwestern hospitality window wave as you pull away. This is often accompanied by a call to “watch out for deer” or something similar.

With a quick “will do,” you're now free to pull away and head home. All the while, your loved ones will stand on the porch waving until your car disappears down the road.

Expert Tip: The only correct response to grandma’s flickering-porch-light wave is a series of honks to let her and everyone present know that you care about them and the traditions of the Midwestern Goodbye.

Showcase Midwestern Culture Through Apparel

All things considered—and although it takes a while—at fancysweetstx, we consider the Midwestern goodbye our favorite way to bid loved ones farewell.

As Midwesterners, this goodbye ritual is a way to let our loved ones know we care about them. It’s also a way to show that we’re not in any rush to leave their company; to reassure them that we enjoyed ourselves and to end your meet-up on a high.

This is what inspired us to create the Midwestern Goodbye Shirt.

It’s the game that introduced the Joker into the modern card deck.

Most importantly, Euchre is as Midwest as it gets.

At fancysweetstx, we love highlighting the people, places, and things that make our region unique. Today, we’re celebrating a true pillar of Midwestern culture: Euchre.

Let’s learn:

  • Why Midwesterners love to play Euchre
  • Which Euchre catchphrases are perfect for t-shirts
  • Where to find Euchre- and Midwestern-themed apparel and gifts

Why Are Midwesterners So in Love With Euchre?

How did Euchre come to be a Midwestern classic? The game’s history isn’t entirely clear.

Euchre is definitely connected to the German people and language, but it’s not known whether or not Germany is the game’s actual birthplace.

The game seems to have spread from German immigrants in Pennsylvania in the early 1800s. It may have been brought over from Germany, or it could have been created in Pennsylvania.

A second theory proposes that Euchre evolved from a card game called Jucker or Juckerspiel that was played in France’s Alsace region.

Curiously, the game spread far and wide, but its popularity became extremely regional. Today, Euchre remains popular in:

  • Great Britain
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Canada
  • The American Midwest

The American region where Euchre is most popular has been dubbed the Euchre Belt and consists of these six states:

  • Michigan
  • Ohio
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Pennsylvania

Plenty of Euchre is played in neighboring states like Wisconsin and New York, too.

Around 200 years ago, Euchre hit the Midwest, and it never left. It’s a game of social strategy and collaboration. It just seems to strike a chord with the Midwestern spirit.

Like most great games, Euchre has its own unique lingo. At fancysweetstx, when we see a catchphrase, we see a t-shirt. Here are a few of our favorites. Bust these out for your next Euchre night, or gift one to the card shark in your family.

1 - Pick It Up, I’m Going Alone

gray and white Pick It Up, I’m Going Alone t-shirt

In the entire card game universe, is there a better catchphrase?

When you know you’ve got the cards to fly solo, there’s no better feeling than uttering these words: “Pick it up, I’m going alone.”

The phrase is just so full of swagger. It sounds like something a superhero might say before running into a burning building to save some kittens.

Of all the apparel designs we’ve created, the “Pick It Up, I’m Going Alone” tee is one of fancysweetstx’s most enthusiastically reviewed items. People love gifting this item to their Euchre buddy who treats “going alone” like the glorious mission that it truly is.

Here’s what people are saying:

”Such a fun gift for my dad! I waited until he actually said these words in the course of a game then brought out the shirt. Epic family memory created.”
— Kat M., ★★★★★ Verified fancysweetstx T-Shirt Buyer

”Euchre is our family "thing". We were tickled to see this shirt. We have purchased two! Thank you!”
— Nancy J., ★★★★★ Verified fancysweetstx T-Shirt Buyer

”The shirt was a birthday gift for my 80-year old Euchre playing father. It was a huge hit!”
— Anonymous, ★★★★★ Verified fancysweetstx T-Shirt Buyer

”My dad is a huge Euchre nut so he was overly excited for this sweatshirt. Material is soft and high quality.”
— Anonymous, ★★★★★ Verified fancysweetstx T-Shirt Buyer

Like most fancysweetstx t-shirts, the “Pick It Up, I’m Going Alone” tee is a poly/cotton/rayon tri-blend. It’s a super soft, comfy, and stretchy shirt—perfect for game nights.

This design is also available on a cozy crew sweatshirt. The “Pick It Up, I’m Going Alone” sweatshirt is a unisex, relaxed fit cotton and polyester blend fleece.

2 - In the Barn

gray and red Euchre-themed In the Barn t-shirt

When you’re “in the barn,” you’ve got nine points … just one away from victory.

To anyone unfamiliar with the card game, this “In the Barn” tee might just seem like a farm-themed shirt—but when you sport it at your next Euchre night, there’ll be no mistaking the catchphrase.

This shirt is gray with bubbly cherry-red lettering. You might not catch it at first glance, but look closer to pick out the unmistakable pointed shape of a classic red barn.

3 - Pass on the Bower, Lose for an Hour

gray Pass on a Bower, Loser for an Hour t-shirt

Pass on a bower? Not a chance.

The “Pass on a Bower, Lose for an Hour” shirt celebrates the power of the bowers, the highest-ranking trump cards in a Euchre deck.

The bower isn’t just a key aspect of gameplay. It’s also an interesting connection to the game’s German roots. Bower comes from bauer, the German word for a farmer or peasant.

This shirt might be a bit confusing to those who have never sat down for a game of Euchre. However, those who know the game will quickly recognize that they’re in the presence of a true card shark.

Does fancysweetstx apparel shrink when it’s washed?

Most fancysweetstx shirts are made with a polyester, cotton, and rayon tri-blend. This combination doesn’t shrink much, if at all.

We also use a 50/50 poly/cotton blend for some items. This blend is also mostly shrink-proof.

Additionally, fancysweetstx sweatpants and sweatshirts are pre-shrunk. Therefore, there’s minimal potential for post-purchase shrinkage. However, some shrinking can occur if you dry your fleece or cotton items with high heat. We recommend hang-drying fleece and cotton items or tumble drying using low heat.

Does fancysweetstx take custom printing orders?

fancysweetstx offers custom screen printing and embroidery. We love working on custom orders for local businesses, non-profit groups, schools, and special events.
