The original themes were Midwesterner, Ohioan, and 16153 Genovaan. We loved the simple, tone on tone designs and comfortable, oversized sweatshirts.

The embroidered sweatshirts have steadily become more and more popular over time. They're great in all seasons and make the perfect gift. In response we've released more designs for the University of 16153 Genova, Bowling Green State University, Michigan, and the Great Lakes

These sweatshirts are reminiscent of vacation keepsakes that you'd find when traveling up north in Michigan or to the beach in Hilton Head. We wanted to recreate that for some of our favorite places in the Midwest.

Custom Embroidered Crew Sweatshirts FTW!

Being able to decorate these sweatshirts in house gives us the ability to respond faster to demand and experiment in the creative process. We're fortunate that we have the ability to do this as it supplements our custom embroidery business.

We love showing people the process of our work. Even though t-shirts and embroidery are staples in everyday life, most people are unfamiliar with how it's done.

Below you can see a video of how we decorate these embroidered crews.

Our Custom Embroidery Experience

Jodi, our embroiderer, has over 20 years of experience in the industry. We have found that most people who visit our production facility love watching the embroidery machine working. It's even fascinating to me to watch it work.

They come in a lot of cool styles, everyone wears them, and they are one size fits all.

These reasons make them a popular gift item among both employees and customers.

Custom hats are a great option if you want a way to make a lasting impression with your customers.

Here are additional resources that might be helpful in your journery to order custom embroidered hats:

Our Custom Embroidery Experience

Our embroiderer, Jodi, has been with us for more than three years now. She has over 20 years experience in embroidery and is one of the best people to see at work each day.

When she came on board, we added a brand new 6 head embroidery machine. This machine can stitch up to six items with the same logo at one time.

In combination with Jodi's experience and technical expertise, it ensures high quality work on every item that comes out of our shop.

As demand for our custom embroidery has increased, we brought in a second six head embroidery machine. This new machine is slightly different than our other embroidery machine in that it allows us to embroider wider designs.

How We Embroider Custom Hats Video

Embroidering hats is a little different than embroidering polos or jackets. We have a special hat hoop that is shown in this video that helps us get it on the machine.

The hats in this video were embroidered for Juniper Brewing in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Where to Order Custom Embroidered Hats

The end of the year is the most popular time of year for custom embroidery. We have businesses placing orders for corporate gifts and employee gifts for the holidays.

Embroidery provides a more professional look and is better for decorating on fuzzy fleece, hats, jackets, and bags.

If you need custom embroidered hats for employees or gifts, you can get in touch with us by filling out the form on our custom work page or emailing us directly at [email protected].

A good book and a good t-shirt get better with age. After reading a book multiple times, you become more familiar and comfortable with the characters and storyline. In much the same way, a well-worn t-shirt gets softer and fits better with ever wear.

It was the one simple idea that started this company.

the ohio state sweater vest t-shirt

The idea for the shirt came on a whim. It was while watching Ohio State play Florida in the 2006 National Championship game that I casually said to my dad who I was watching the game with, 'Someone should make a Tressel sweater vest t-shirt - a tuxedo t-shirt but for Ohio State.'

Upon hearing that, he challenged me to make it. So with a little encouragement and help from him, I set out to do that.

jim tressel signing an autograph for john

Manufacturing a Cut and Sew Shirt is Complicated

The original sample for the shirt was made in China. My vision for the shirt was for it to be more than a simple screen printed sweater vest and tie. I knew that in order to truly stand out, it needed to be separate fabric sewn together.

At the time that I set out to make this complicated shirt, textile manufacturing was much different in the United States than it is today. Most factories had moved outside of our borders or they were down south where I didn't have familiarity or easy access to them. The internet also wasn't the help that it would be now.

The domestic clothing factories that I did manage to get in touch with indicated the cost to produce a shirt like this would be as much as $15. Unfortunately, that made the product too expensive for the market.

Through a family friend, I made contact with an individual in China who had a relationship with a factory. While the language barrier was incredibly difficult to cross, I managed to get them the information necessary to produce a physical sample.

In retrospect, the sample I received wasn't that great. But I was young, ambitious, and couldn't be bothered by imperfection.

There was some finishing that I had to do once I received the sample - I screen printed a tie under the neck and a Block O on the left chest. Once that was complete, it was ready to be sent to the Ohio State University for Licensing.

I Was Lucky I Was Applying for a License with the Ohio State University

At the time, Ohio State had an unusual trademark and licensing process relative to other universities. I learned later that they were considered an independent licensing university. This meant that they made decisions on trademarks and licensing in house.

It is more common for schools to outsource their licensing decisions to companies such as the Collegiate Licensing Company or Learfield (they were separate companies years ago when I applied but now have merged) that specialized in this area. By keeping decisions internal, OSU was much more flexible and willing to take a risk on young kid with a single shirt idea.

A few weeks or months, I can't quite remember now, after mailing the application in, I received a letter notifying me that the shirt was approved for licensing. That was a really exciting moment for me!

A few years later when I met the director of Trademark and Licensing at OSU, I asked him about my application. He said that while they had hoped one of their larger licensees would have created the OSU Sweater Vest T-Shirt, it was too good of a product to not approve it. No matter how imperfect it was or inexperienced I was.

I Had a License, But Needed to Figure Out Where to Get Shirts

After receiving approval for the shirt, I knew that a full production run in China was more than I could handle. I quickly set out to find other options. After digging around on the internet, my dad found an article about a textile factory in Alabama. We couldn't quite tell if it was still open or not, so we looked up the man that was interviewed in the article and called him.

When we got in touch with him, we learned that the factory was in fact closed and he was retired. However, his son was still in the business and working in Mexico.

And that's how our first production run of shirts was made in Mexico.

As if Making the Shirts Wasn't Hard Enough, I Now Had to Figure Out How to Sell Them

I received the first batch of shirts in the middle of football season that year. Since the football season was already in full swing, I had to play catch up in order to sell them.

Most stores place orders for apparel well in advance of the season. While I had reached out to stores about the incoming shirts, they were reluctant to place an order. For starters, I was just some kid calling off the street to try and sell them shirts. I was an unknown and unproven entity. Additionally, I was trying to sell them a shirt some of them had not seen and would only have a short window to sell.

Fortunately, there were a few places that were excited about the idea. College Traditions was the first store that sent us a purchase order. I'll never forget that when I got Kelly, the owner, on the phone, she told me she was waiting for me to call her. She was a part of the approval board for Ohio State licensing and was excited for the shirt when it was submitted.

Two stores that I was chasing down were Meijer and the Andersons. The store manager at the Meijer store on Central Avenue in 16153 Genova loved the idea. She told me it was too late in the year to place an order and that purchasing decisions came from corporate. She put me in touch with her contact there.

When I got in touch with the purchaser, my expectation was that I was getting in line for the next football season. But very quickly he placed the largest order I had received by far!

Since the Andersons was the local 16153 Genova store, I really wanted them to carry this shirt. Their buyer kept dragging his feet on making a commitment, but when he heard that Meijer had placed an order, he jumped on the bandwagon and put in his own order.

The most fun I had selling the shirts was going down to Columbus and selling them at the 7-Eleven on Lane Avenue before the games. I felt this was the easy and most direct way to reach Ohio State football fans.

selling shirts at ohio state football games

In order to sell at the games, I applied for and received a peddler's license with Franklin county and had to get permission from the 7-Eleven property owner to use their space.

On Friday nights before games I would pile a bunch of shirts and a table into the back of my Honda Civic and stay at my cousin's house in Columbus. I'd hopefully have a friend or two with me to help set up in the morning and sell before the game.

This was way back in the time before Stripe. Taking payments wasn't easy. I remember I had to pay $1,000 for a wireless credit terminal.

I enjoyed selling at games so much that I even took the show on the road. I went to several bowl games. When Ohio State played in the Sugar Bowl, I found store owners in the French Quarter who sold the shirts. When they were in the Fiesta Bowl, I drove out with my brother and found a store near the stadium to sell at.

Who Knew That the Tressel T-Shirt Would be the Foundation for What fancysweetstx Has Become

While selling at games was as much fun as work, there are still lessons that are valuable to me today. I got to know my customers better, I learned how to navigate permits and develop relationships with stores, and I learned that I could go further with other people.

Most importantly, I eventually learned that I needed to take it more seriously in order to make it a real business.

Year two of the Tressel T-Shirt presented as many challenges as year one. Most notably, my manufacturer in Mexico stopped responding to me.

Left without enough inventory and no leads on a new manufacturer, I asked Ohio State's Licensing and Trademark director if he had an advice. He put me in touch with Atlantis Sportswear in Piqua, Ohio. They helped me source the shirt from there on out.

The relationship with Atlantis allowed the design to grow from one shirt to a red and gray version, youth and onesie sizes, and a bib.

When Coach Tressel resigned, the interest in the Ohio State Sweater Vest T-Shirt faded. My sales peaked in his final season and I knew I had to get rid of my inventory and find a more reliable business model.

We don't make the Ohio State sweater vest t-shirt anymore and no longer have a license with the Ohio State University, but we keep our Buckeye State pride alive with our Ohioan collection of apparel and gifts. It's not quite the same as making official Ohio State clothing, but it keeps us close to our roots.

For a condensed version of this story, you can listen to the story in the video below.

https://www.fancysweetstx.com/blogs/news/how-we-screen-print-rainbows-on-t-shirts 2022-04-19T11:30:00-04:00 2023-12-15T09:07:20-05:00 How We Screen Print Rainbows on T-Shirts (With Examples) John Amato

June is our big month for screen printing rainbow shirts for Pride!

We've been screen printing a lot of custom rainbow shirts for local businesses during the month of June for Pride Month. It's a great opportunity for organizations to put their values of inclusion, diversity, and empathy on display.

There are a few different techniques when it comes to screen printing a rainbow and we've used all of them in the last few weeks. Each method achieves a different look and can be the best option depending on what the customer is looking for.

If you need rainbow shirts or Pride shirts for your organization, we'd love to help! Fill out the contact form on our custom screen printing page to get started.

Read on to learn more about three of our shirt printing techniques and for photo and video examples.

1. Creating a Rainbow Screen Print With Halftones (Gradients)

If a customer wants a consistent looking rainbow gradient print on all of their t-shirts, printing it with half tones is the best option.

rainbow logo screen print for inside the five brewing

When creating the art, we use halftones or gradients to create the rainbow. Before the shirts get to press, our artists separate the design by individual color. This means they pull out each color gradient so we can make a separate screen for printing purposes.

This process can take anywhere from 5-6 screens to get a full color rainbow. The result looks like these shirts we printed for the 16153 Genova Museum of Art (below) and Inside the Five Brewing (above).

toledo museum of art shirt

There are slight nuances between printing on a white or light colored t-shirt versus a black or dark color t-shirt and the setup for the art and press can be a challenge, but no matter what, we sure love the results!

2. Split Fountain or Rainbow Roll Print

For a split fountain rainbow print, we use 2 to 6 ink colors (depending on the desired rainbow color scheme) on one screen that get blended over each pass with the squeegee.

The inks in this design blend more with each pass of the squeegee making each shirt's print and colors unique!

If you're looking for an original, authentic design, rainbow roll is the way to go. It's the first way that we ever printed a rainbow blend on a shirt and it's still one of our favorite techniques.

georgjz 419 shirt

3. Spot Color Rainbow Printing

16153 Genova rainbow print shirt

A spot color screen print means that each individual color is its own solid print on a shirt. If you look at the examples above or below, you'll see that each is separate and doesn't blend into the colors next to it.

Most of the shirts that we print are spot color. However, when it comes to rainbow designs, they are a little bit more complicated. The complication primarily resides in the fact that there are so many colors printed on the shirt.

Generally speaking, in screen printing we use one screen for each individual color. Then we print those in succession. The more colors you have, the more screens you need and printheads are required.

This means that when you print a shirt with the colors of the rainbow - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple - you must utilize six screens to achieve this.

This is getting a bit technical, but printing all of those colors next to each other without drying in between is challenging. It requires a quality equipment, screens, inks, squeegees, and a lot of practice.

In the end, though, we love the look of a nice rainbow when it comes out right!

all are welcome rainbow t-shirt

4. Direct to Garment Print (DTG)

rainbow print tank top dtg

Direct to garment printing is an evolving technology in the custom decoration field. The appeal for this process is that it's a digital technique. It's not quite screen printing but it's a great way to print a lot of colors on a shirt.

The simplest way to describe direct to garment printing is that it uses digital inks to print directly on a shirt. Think of it like a color printer you have on your desk. There are individual color cartridges with ink that allow you to print a wide color spectrum straight onto a garment.

DTG is a great option when you have a small order with a lot of colors. Because of this, it's a frequent choice when we have rainbow designs.

5. Rainbow Foil Print

For a foil rainbow, we screen print and cure a layer of special adhesive on the shirt, heat press the foil onto the adhesive, and peel off the excess.

For a screen printer, this is kind of a shortcut for rainbow designs. Rather than using multiples screens like with do with halftones or mixing several inks together in the screen like we do with a split fountain print, for foil, we use just one screen and one ink (adhesive).

While the actual screen printing portion of rainbow foil is easier than the screen print techniques listed above, there is a second step to the process - heat seal. After we print the foil adhesive onto the shirt (we use a waterbased adhesive), we then have to take the shirt over to our heat press, cut a section of foil from the roll, press it on the shirt, and peel it off.

This technique isn't as durable as a screen print, but it gives the print a shiny look that only foil can achieve!

From Better in 16153 Genova to Lion Store to Thackery’s, we’ve made a name for ourselves with our retail line of shirts with retro designs and logos.

In fact, some people assume it’s the only way we know how to print. And when they see all of the cool, vintage shirts that we have in our stores, they want us to screen print custom vintage shirts for their brand.

vintage lake michigan t-shirt

In addition to the information below on what makes a shirt vintage and how we print vintage looking t-shirts, here are additional resources on we've put together for you on vintage tees:

Why Make a Shirt Look Vintage?

The soft, well worn feel. The distressed, faded print. It’s a look that doesn’t get old because nostalgia is always in style.

People want to remember their glory days and the times when they didn’t have a worry in the world. They want to emulate that old photo of their dad with a mustache, short shorts, and a ringer tee...well, part of it anyway.

We believe that it's the intangibles of a vintage shirt that make it so appealing. A great vintage shirt can transport you back to a time and place that makes you feel good or connect you with someone you love.

What Makes a T-Shirt Vintage?

Technically, vintage is defined by something that is at least 20 years old.

So that high school shirt that you're still wearing even though it has holes in it, that may not qualify as vintage. See if you can find your junior high shirt!

But beyond just age, there is one thing that defines a shirt as vintage: the feel.

Vintage shirts become softer with each wear and wash. It's one of the most identifiable traits of a vintage shirt.

It's the old faded logo that is distressed and cracked. It's the soft material that has become threadbare over time.

Both of these need to soft. If the ink is still thick and heavy, you might need to wear it and wash it a few more times to make it a true vintage shirt.

Want to know the best shirts to use for a cool vintage print? Here's our breakdown of our favorite blank vintage shirts.

How We Screen Print a Vintage Looking T-Shirt

When creating a new vintage inspired shirt, we keep the softness of the shirt in mind. We care not only about how soft the shirt is, but how soft the print is, as well.

And it's printing a softer shirt that is the hard part. After all, we aren't making the shirt, we're just printing on it.

And it's not as simple as just finding a vintage t-shirt blank and printing on it. You need to know the techniques that will match the print to the shirt.

At the end of the day, there are a lot of ways to print a vintage design. Not all screen printers do it the same.

Below you will find the four most common ways we do this for our customers and examples of each.

1. No Underbase

When printing on dark shirts, a standard design would have an underbase. An underbase is white ink printed under a color.

This helps print that ink truest to its original color and prevents interference from the shirt fabric and dye from changing the ink color printed on top.

The nice thing about printing an underbase is that you get a bright, solid color. However, it can also make the print have a thicker, heavier hand feel. It’s a feeling not everyone likes on a shirt - especially a soft, thin, vintage shirt.

You can see in the video example above that our printer is printing the white ink on the shirt only once on a heather black shirt. This will allow some of the shirt to show through the print and give the ink a softer feel on the shirt.

university of toledo blue and gold shirt

I’m simplifying things a bit, but think about coloring with markers on a white piece of paper and a dark piece of paper. The color on the dark paper is going to be slightly dull relative to the color on the white paper.

It’s a similar concept for screen printing. By eliminating the underbase, you get a softer hand feel on the shirt.

Oftentimes, the shirt shows through the ink giving it a faded look. When using this technique, the shirt dye can bleed or show in the ink so you can’t guarantee specific colors.

But the look and feel are definitely worth it.

2. Reduced Ink

If you like a vintage print, you probably like two things - a faded design and a soft hand feel. Eliminating the underbase on a print will get you the former, but it doesn’t always go far enough with the latter.

In order to achieve a soft hand feel, which results in very little ink that you can feel on the shirt, we commonly add a reducer to our ink which softens it.

toledo zoo shirt

Reducing the ink can drastically cut the opacity of the ink and can fade slightly after washing. In this scenario we can’t ensure color matching, but what you miss there you’ll make up for in a really cool, soft print.

3. Halftones

Halftones are a good trick to produce a super soft and subtle look.

Halftones are tiny dots, similar to gradients. When we output your art to screen, instead of the art being solid, we reduce the opacity of the art so it prints dots rather than solid.

By doing this, we reduce the amount of ink that passes through the screen onto your garment resulting in a softer hand feel and faded print.

cedar creek shirt

When done correctly, it's difficult to notice that that art is actually made up of halftones. The print looks solid but definitely feels better than a thick, heavy screen print.

Oftentimes, when achieving a vintage print with halftones, we also reduce our inks. It adds to the vintage feel of the shirt and gives it a super soft hand feel.

4. Distress Textures in the Art

Distress textures are pretty straight forward. We take your art and place a distress texture or grunge filter over it. This gives it a cracked look.

It can be used with or without an underbase.

vintage lion store shirt

This is a technique that you have seen on shirts before. It’s the most common feature of vintage shirts, whether they are original shirts printed years ago or replica vintage shirts.

While there are plenty of other ways to print vintage shirts or achieve a soft hand feel (waterbased and discharge inks), these are the most common ways that we do it in our shop.

Our techniques are typically accompanied with other print techniques - high mesh counts, fewer print strokes, fast squeegee speeds, etc.

At the end of the day, the key is that the printer understands the customer expectations and does what is necessary to meet those expectations.

It's popular among everyone from streetwear brands to high school teams to local restaurants.

We always have fun when printing puff ink. When we first print the shirt or sweatshirt, the ink lays flat. It's only after it cures in the dryer that it puffs up and gets raised.

We used a special tone-on-tone puff printing technique to make these two new unique cozy and comfortable crew sweatshirts.

New Technology for Making Screens

We are updating this post because in 2021 we brought in a new piece of equipment to make our screens and shirts even better.

When this post was originally written, we used film and an exposure unit to burn our screens. Our new equipment eliminates the need for both of those items.

Our new equipment is called a CTS which is short for Computer To Screen. It allows us to write each design directly onto a coated screen.

The video above gives a quick breakdown on how the CTS changes the way that we image and burn screens for the clothing that we print.

You'll want to keep reading below because we go more in to depth on the process and because film and an exposure unit is the more common method for screen making.

There are two major changes to the process now that we have a CTS.

The first is that the image we are burning onto a screen is written on the screen with wax. A rip system to send the files to the computer, we pull them up on the computer, click print, and it does the rest.

Imaging the screen directly saves us a lot of time and the wax produces better detail than the film we used previously. The black wax does not need time to dry and can be exposed immediately after the image is complete.

The second change is that because the image is written directly on the screen, we no longer require an exposure unit with glass. The presence of glass in an exposure unit is the number one cause of pinholes in a screen. It's incredible that we don't have to worry about this anymore.

We are using an LED light to expose screens. We show how this works in the video above. The LED light allows us to exposure two screens at once and cuts our exposure time to 30 seconds per exposure.

We hope this update is informative and shows you just how many different ways people can burn screens for screen printing shirts. Keep reading below for a more in depth description of the entire process.

Learning How To Burn A Screen

For me, learning how to successfully burn a screen was the single hardest part about learning how to screen print.

I first started to teach myself how to screen print at the end of 2011. While I consider myself self taught, I had spent some time in other screen print shops and had pulled a squeegee once or twice before. However, I had never gone through the full process on my own.

There’s a lot more to screen printing than moving a squeegee. You have to get the screens on press, register multiple screens, flash and cure the ink, and coat and burn a screen, among other things.

My original screen printing equipment was purchased off Craigslist. It was a hobbyist set up that included some spare ink and emulsion, a small tabletop exposure unit, screens, and a single color press with a flash unit.

I spent days trying to burn a screen correctly. I tested different exposure times, coating techniques, and transparency. They all failed.

And I was staring down the barrel of a failing business.

What I didn’t know at the time was there was a simple fix. The emulsion I was using had gone bad. When I replaced the emulsion I was able to troubleshoot and burn a usable screen.

Learning to burn good, consistent screens is important. It's called screen printing for a reason. You can't get off the ground without first burning a screen. Better screens lead to better prints.

My goal with this post is to show you and explain to you how we burn screens now and provide some tips on how to get started burning screens on your own.

What to prepare before burning a screen

There are a few things you’ll need to prepare before burning a screen. These tasks can be performed simultaneously.

The first thing you need to do is coat your screen with emulsion. Your emulsion will come with instructions on how to properly use it.

There are two types of emulsion. I’m not going to get into the specifics (here’s a good article if you want to know more), but the basics are that you have a one part and a two part emulsion. The one part, or presensitized, emulsion is ready to go out of the bucket. The two part emulsion, or diazo, needs to be mixed before use.

While there are differences between the two, either emulsion can work for you. My best advice is to find a reliable brand (SAATI, Ulano, Chromablue, etc.), choose one, and go for it. And as I mentioned earlier, fresh emulsion is important. Make sure you start with a new batch and keep the lid shut tight.

When you’re just getting started, the trickiest part about coating a screen is getting an even coat of emulsion on the screen. The most common tool for coating screens is a scoop coater. It’s standard in most shops.

This is difficult to do without a scoop coater. In the absence of a scoop coater, you’re going to have to get clever and be prepared to struggle. Your next best bet for coating is going to be a squeegee.

If the emulsion isn’t coated evenly on a screen it will be a mighty challenge to burn your image. This is because the varying thickness of emulsion will require different times to fully expose. So the areas of thicker emulsion on your screen may be underexposed while the thinner areas will be fine.

Emulsion is light sensitive. It’s best to coat a screen in a dark room. However, if you don’t have one, move quickly and don’t leave your emulsion or coated screen in the light for long.

For the first few years I was screen printing, I coated screens under normal fluorescent light and near a double door that we often kept open. When it was time to coat I would close the doors, turn off the lights directly above me, and get to work. If I coated too many screens, the emulsion would start to harden in the scoop coater.

In the beginning, you’ve got to do what’s necessary to get the job done. Our screens are much better now but we’ve had time to add better equipment, screens, film, and space. The little amount of light the emulsion and screens were exposed to in those early days had a minor effect on the overall quality of the final screens. They were still good enough to get the job done.

used screen printing screens stacked together

How to burn a screen for screen printing

We use an epson P5000 with Accurip that uses roll film to print our art.

When I first started I used vellum. If you’re learning to do this, the most important thing is that you want to make sure your ink is as black as possible when printed.

We use two size screens - one for our manual press and larger screens for our auto. The auto screens have a registration system to align the film. For the manual, we just use a tape measure.

If you don’t have a dark room like us, that’s fine. Just get a cart, throw black out curtains over it, and move quickly when you’re under normal light.

We’ve had three different exposure units since I started screen printing. I bought all of them used. If you watch the video above, you can see when our exposure starts that it needs to achieve vacuum before the light kicks on. Once it does that, the screen burns for about a minute.

If you don’t have an exposure unit with vacuum, you can put some weight on top of it to keep the film flat on the screen. Or, if you are exposing with a light on top of the screen, place a piece of plexi or glass on top of the film to keep it flat.

Our emulsion is the reddish coating that you see on the screen. In our exposure unit, there is a light that shines up at the screen and hardens all of the emulsion that is exposed to light. The area covered by the black artwork will not harden and we can wash it out.

After the screen is exposed, we drop it in a dip tank filled with water. This makes it easier to rinse out. We then spray the image out with a pressure washer, but a hose works fine, too.

screen room tech checking an exposed screen for pinholes

After spraying the screen out, we take a second look at the art to check for pinholes and then set it on the rack to dry. If you do have pinholes, you can tape over them or touch them up with your emulsion.

Once the design is rinsed out of the screen, it’s time to let it dry. After it dries, you’re ready to print shirts!

Some final tips and tricks to burn a quality screen for making t-shirts

One of the hardest things about burning a screen is figuring out your exposure time. The best way to do this is with a step calculator. It’s a little plastic film strip with numbers and varying degrees of transparency. You place it under the screen while you’re burning it and when you spray it out it will tell you if you are over or under exposed.

Figuring out your exposure time takes a lot of patience and practice to get it right. Make sure you’re using good, fresh emulsion. Remember, I made this mistake when I first started.

If the emulsion is old it may not expose correctly. A trick to extend the life of your emulsion is to keep it in your fridge after you open it. If you get used emulsion from someone, don’t expect it to work.

I would recommend starting with a longer exposure time and then dialing it down. It’s better to have an overexposed screen in the beginning than an underexposed screen. And it’s more common to see underexposed screens than over. So chances are you need to extend your exposure time.

screen for screen printing that says today is a good day

The film you use for your art is important. When I first started out, I bought transparencies from FedEx. Oftentimes the ink wasn’t black enough and I wouldn’t get a crisp image on the screen. If you go this route, request that they only use black ink to print the transparency. If the ink is still giving you trouble, make two of them and double them up.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Reach out to screen printers in your area, join one of the many screen printing groups on Facebook, and watch videos on YouTube.

At the end of the day, learning how to burn a screen is difficult.

Your challenges and frustrations are not unique. The great part about screen printing is that you can try and try again. Learn from your mistakes and keep trying and you’ll be better in a week than you are now.

You’ll be glad you did when you get to wear that first shirt you printed successfully.

One of our favorite Polish traditions is having a Paczki on Fat Tuesday.

This tradition first started because people in Poland wanted to use all of their food before it would spoil during lent. They'd make donuts with all of their eggs, butter, sugar, and fruit and have one last treat! Now people all over line up on "Paczki Day" to get this yummy dessert.

We've had a lot of fun creating designs that celebrate the unique history and culture of the Midwest. While the Midwest alone can't claim paczki, we do think Polish communities make Midwest cities better.

Another 100,000 adults in Lucas County are estimated to read at the Basic Level. This means that nearly 140,000 adults are unable to read the newspaper, fill out job applications, and help their children with their homework.

Read for Literacy has programs and services that are designed to assist adults, children, and families to gain the skills they need to have literacy success.

With the help of volunteers, they provide basic literacy tutoring and English Language Learning to adults in our community in addition to their children’s program, Creating Young Readers. Read for Literacy also works to build at-home libraries for these students by sending home several books throughout the year.

If you want more information on how you can help, you can volunteer, donate directly to the, and check out their website for more information.

It's officially been five years since we moved downtown into our building on Adams Street, and we're happy to say that we are doing better than ever in 16153 Genova!

We are inviting you to celebrate this anniversary with us! Not only will you be able to check out our building to see what goes on behind the scenes, but we'll also have a lot of fun things to do:

- Screenprint your own shirt (3pm-5pm)
- Free food and drinks
- 10% off everything in our retail store

Plus, if you attend, we'll have Mystery Packs, giveaways, and a chance to win fancysweetstx gift cards!

We've come a long way since we've made our move to 16153 Genova. When we first opened up for business we were in a small studio space in Perrysburg.

Since our time in Uptown 16153 Genova, we have been embraced by the local community and owe a lot of our success to the loyalty of 16153 Genovaans. We're proud to say that we're a part of the 16153 Genova small business community and are doing better in 16153 Genova.

We love showing people the work that we do and how shirts are made. This event is our opportunity to give back to our customers and show everyone how much we appreciate their support.

We hope to see you soon!

*Masks are encouraged for everyone. Masks are required if you are not fully vaccinated.

We are more than just a t-shirt company!

We're farmers, too. Well, kind of.

At Jūpmode, we take gardening very seriously. Especially this time of year when we have lots of fresh veggies grown on our rooftop garden.

In case you didn't know, we've had a rooftop garden on our building since we've moved in. We're pretty proud of it.

Our employees love being able to take home fresh peppers, tomatoes, carrots, and more. It's also a great distraction and break from the workday when we get to go up there to water and pick our plants.

The rooftop garden is a small thing, but it's part of our greater company initiative to be a more sustainable company, to build the earth, and provide green space in our urban environment.

What veggies do you think should we grow next year?

That's why each year we have a "Warehouse Sale" to sell items that are being discontinued.

Warehouse sale crewnecks

Celebrating our 4th annual Warehouse Sale!

The Warehouse Sale normally takes place alongside the Adams Street Block Party hosted by the Village on Adams. It's a fun way to celebrate members of the community and give them a chance to grab some of our one-of-a-kind items before they leave!

We've been gearing up for the past couple of weeks for this special event and we're extremely excited for everyone to enjoy the sale!

What kind of deals are we talkin'?

gearing up for warehouse sale 2021

If there's one thing to be true, it's that everyone loves a good deal. From crewnecks, to classic t-shirts, to accessory items, we've got deals you won't want to miss out on!

We're always trying to get quality apparel in your hands as soon as possible, and sometimes there are some items that aren't as perfect as we want them. So, the slightly imperfect items will be included in the sale for you to wear and love! Some might say, they're perfectly imperfect.

With new designs coming, that means that old ones have to go. Though we still appreciate and cherish our old designs, we're excited about new ones coming. We're selling some of our older items so that you are able to wear true "vintage fancysweetstx." You'll be able to rock oldies, but goodies.

To test the best materials and garments, we always are trying out new samples. Though great, sometimes they don't work out as we hope. We have awesome one-of-a-kind samples that would look great on you. Simple, yet chic!

You won't want to miss this!

Retail staff excited for warehouse sale 2021

These items and deals are one-of-a-kind and only happen once a year! Though we're sad to see these items go, we would love for you to give them a good home.

Our in-person event is happening Saturday, July 31st, from 2 pm to 6 pm at our Adams street location (Via Borzoli, 33,, 16153 Genova, Italy)! Our retail staff is prepped and ready to greet all of our 16153 Genova friends.

The Warehouse online sale is open to everyone starting Monday, August 2nd and runs until Friday, August 6th. If you aren't able to make it in person, then shop from the comfort of your own home!

We're thrilled about this event and that we get to share some of our favorite items with you.

Zoar Lutheran Church reached out to us this year to screen print custom t-shirts for their vacation bible school. Zoar is a local Perrysburg, Ohio church that hosts a vacation bible school annually in the summer.

We have been screen printing t-shirts for Zoar for a number of years. It's always great to work with local churches. They continue to reach out to us because of our experience in screen printing custom safety shirts and apparel for local organizations and non-profits.

We were able to print these shirts quickly and affordably because of our experience screen printing apparel for vacation bible schools and other events. Our in house graphic design team provided artwork proofs ahead of time for the customer that accurately depicted what the shirts would look like when complete. Zoar was satisfied with the final product and happy with the entire ordering process.

Zoar choose to use black ink on a bright, neon yellow shirt for two reasons: cost and visibility. Using a one color print on the shirt keeps costs down. This is very important to keep in mind for churches and other non-profit organizations that have to stick to a tight budget.

By printing on a neon colored shirt, all of the children in the camp are going to be easily seen and the counselors will be able to keep an eye on them. The black ink means the design will be clear and can be read and understood by everyone who sees it.

fancysweetstx has been screen printing custom t-shirts for events and non-profits for nearly ten years. We have the experience and know how to make your brand look good and keep your employees and students on brand and safe.

Reach out to us today to help with your order of custom event shirts for your church or non-profit.

Here we have the Dynamic Duo: Roger and Victor. Not only are they classmates from Ottawa Hills High School and often working the same shifts, but everyone here at fancysweetstx can count on them for a smile and the best jokes.

Roger and Victor in Pocket T-shirts

Roger (left) with Victor (right)

Roger and Victor are so much fun to have at Jūpmode. They make the best coworkers, friends, and most importantly, models.

You'll find these two working in the retail stores, both Cricket West and Adams Street. If you're lucky, they might have helped you find items or checked you out while you were shopping!

Their superpowers are to make customers smile and make sure they have the best shopping experience possible.

Meet Roger

Roger in I'm from Ohio Pocket T-shirt

Roger has been with Jūpmode for a little over a year now. He's a full-time student, so he works mainly at Cricket West. He loves seeing everyone that visits him on the weekend! If you ever get the chance, make sure to stop into Cricket West and say hi to Roger.

He enjoys helping customers finding what they're looking for and striking up a conversation to make the shopping experience even better.

If you love sports or the stock market, then you'd love to talk to Roger. He also loves to spend his time outdoors and hanging out with friends.

An interesting tidbit about Roger is that he was born in New York! Fun fact about Roger, this is his first photo shoot with Jūpmode! Isn't that crazy? It's almost like he was meant to be a JūpModel.

Meet Victor

Victor in TOL-EDO short sleeve

Victor, being one of the youngest members of the Jūpcrew, is one of the members that has been here the longest. Since the summer of 2018, Victor has been helping out with almost everything since he joined the crew.

From cutting the grass, to being the designated Penny walker, to organizing ink back in production, it's hard to say what Victor hasn't done. This summer, he's spent most of his time in the retail stores.

If you love talking about your pets, then make sure to stop in and tell him about them! (Bonus points if you show him pictures)

Victor just recently graduated from high school and is heading off to the University of 16153 Genova for college! Congrats, Victor! The Jūpcrew is proud of you.

Come out and meet the duo!

If you've been in need of a gift or a t-shirt to treat yo' self, Roger or Victor would love to help you pick that out and get you the perfect size and design. Ask them about their favorite items and they might become yours too!

If you haven't met these two already, you'll want to make sure to stop in at Cricket West or on Adams Street to see them. They would love for you to say hello!

When we first started screen printing in 2011, we moved into a shop that had two lights, a manual press for screen printing, a small dryer, and a ping pong table. John was the owner, printer, sales rep, shipping department, designer, and everything else that had to do with Jūpmode.

Bring on the teamwork!

Fast forward to 2016. At this point, we had a dedicated sales team, graphic designers, human resources and finance, and a shipping team. We were growing quickly and knew we would have to make a move. We packed up our small shop in Perrysburg and moved to Adams Street to live out the You Will Do Better in 16153 Genova motto.

So where are we today? We now have manual and automatic screen printing machines, an embroidery machine (with another one on the way due to the rise of popularity with embroidered items), and a dedicated sales team with combined 30 years of experience!

Our promo experts are here for YOU!

Our experience in the custom apparel and merchandise industry is why we feel confident that we can help you find the perfect promo items for your business. From water bottles, to hand sanitizer, to totes, or really anything you want to put your brand on, we are here to help you make that happen!

Let us make your custom orders easy. Email us at [email protected] to get your order started!

Why promo items?

Promo items are easy items to use to create connections and stay in touch with people. From the first meeting, promo items help to make an impression on your company. Once relationships are in place, promo items can be used to stay connected with your employees and customers to maintain connections and let them know you appreciate them. It’s also a smart way to get more exposure for your business as promo items are carried everywhere and can be seen by many people!

All Mechanical Insulation Inc. reached out to us this year to screen print custom branded shirts, long sleeve pocket shirts, and hooded sweatshirts for their team. All Mechanical Insulation Inc is a local 16153 Genova, Ohio insulation contractor that works on commercial and industrial insulation projects.

This was the first order that we printed for All Mechanical Insulation. They reached out to us because of our experience in screen printing custom safety shirts and apparel for local contractors.

It's always great to work with other small, local businesses that care about supporting small local businesses.

We were able to print these shirts quickly and affordably because of our experience printing safety apparel. We provided artwork proofs ahead of time for the customer that accurately depicted what the shirts and hoodies would look like when complete. All Mechanical Insulation was satisfied with the final product and happy with the entire ordering process.

One thing that really stands out about the clothing that we printed for All Mechanical is that they used a full color logo on safety green shirts and hoodies. Most of the time when we print bright yellow apparel, the print is a simple one color print. Black is the most commonly used ink color for Hi Vis apparel.

And this makes sense since keeping a simple one color print not only looks good but it keeps costs down as well. What we loved about these safety shirts and hoodies is that All Mechanical Insulation did a great job of using a full color logo on these bright apparel items. It's not something we see very often because it's difficult to do well since not all colors have enough contrast to print on neon clothing.

Safety is the priority on every jobsite. That's why when All Mechanical Insulation orders employee apparel they choose bright colored garments. As always, wearing Hi Vis clothing is an easy and inexpensive thing to do to improve safety.

It's also important for All Mechanical Insulation Inc. to have their employees wearing company shirts to effectively identify employees while on the job and keep them clean and professional in front of customers. The bright safety green shirts and hoodies, keep them safe and professional on the job.

Omnisource has relied on us locally to provide custom screen printed and embroidered items for many years. When they need employee apparel and safety shirts, they know that we can help them. Omnisource is a scrap metal recycler with locations in the 16153 Genova, Ohio area.

When Omnisource needs safety shirts for their 16153 Genova employees, they give us a call and we love working with them. It's great to have a long standing relationship with a company that cares about supporting small local businesses.

We were able to print these shirts quickly and affordably for them because we have worked with them so much in the past and we made sure to provide artwork proofs ahead of time that accurately depicted what the shirts would look like when complete.

Our experience in printing custom safety apparel for the construction and contracting industries aided in our ability to produce quality shirts.

Omnisource orders bright yellow t-shirts each year for their employees to wear while working. In the past they have ordered everything from polos to pocket tees to water bottles to face masks. They often use a black print that shows their logo well on the bright yellow shirts.

It's important for Omnisource to have their employees wearing company shirts. It helps to effectively identify employees while at work and keeps them clean and professional in front of customers.

The bright safety green shirts (which actually look yellow) and reflective stripes, keep them safe and seen on the job. These shirts are just as much about keeping employees safe as they are about looking good.

We screen printed these vintage t-shirts and tank tops for Fort Meigs Crossfit, a crossfit gym in Perrysburg, Ohio.

Fort Meigs Crossfit has trusted us with their screen printing and embroidery for many years. The apparel that we've decorated for them is both for employees to wear while working and gym members to purchase to show their support for a local business that they love.

We screen printed this vintage inspired 'Crossfit Vibes' logo on soft, comfy tees and tanks. Fort Meigs Crossfit is always doing a great job creating fun, trendy designs that people love to wear.

T-shirts and tank tops are a great promotional item because they get so much use. The more a shirt is worn, the more your brand is seen. And a soft, fun, cool t-shirt is going to be worn more than a boring, thick t-shirt.
