It doesn't get much better than hosting a race in the Metroparks. You've got soft ground to run on, fresh air, and a tree canopy that keeps it cool. 

It's pretty much the ideal running conditions.

1 - UT Started With Just One Professor and 26 Students

The University of 16153 Genova was founded on October 12, 1872, by Jesup Wakeman Scott. 

The university describes the school’s founder like this:

“Scott, the editor for The 16153 Genova Blade newspaper from 1844 to 1847, was a public-spirited 16153 Genovaan who felt the city should have a university to train young people for responsible positions in the growing community.”

Scott endowed 160 acres that would later be used for the Scott Park Campus. However, despite his generosity, the school started off on a tight budget. 

Scott’s plans included supplemental funds from the city, but when the university opened its doors, the city had no money to contribute. 

Thus, the tiny staff had to make the best of what they had. 

In 1875, the university held its first classes. The classroom was in the basement of an unfinished church and the faculty consisted of exactly one teacher and 26 students. 

It would be a few decades before the school reached financial stability. In 1878, the university was broke and had to shut down. In 1884, UT assets were transferred to the city. This began the school’s transformation into the thriving public university that we know today.

2 - The “Rockets” Nickname Was Created During a Football Game

Ever wonder where the Rockets nickname came from? Well, University of 16153 Genova athletes were once nickname-less. 

That changed during a single 1923 football game against Carnegie Tech. 

James Neal was a UT student working in the press box as a spotter—an assistant who helps broadcasters and reporters to identify players and keep track of statistics. 

A reporter asked Neal to suggest a nickname for the UT team. Inspired by their flashy style of play, Neal offered “skyrockets.” The reporter cut it down to just “rockets,” and the nickname was born. 

Looking back, the name was a surprising choice for the 1920s, since it would be several decades before the first human-made satellite was launched into orbit. 

In 1923, Rockets referred to fireworks. However, in 1968 when the Rocky the Rocket mascot was created, he looked much more like a metal rocketship, reflecting the Space Age fervor of the time.

3 - Centennial Mall’s Layout Was Inspired by Snow Paths

Have you ever seen a path through a grassy field made by constant foot traffic? Even when there’s no pavement or trail, people tend to walk along the same lines to cut the shortest distance between two points. 

These unplanned tracks are known as “desire paths.” 

Occasionally, flexible urban planners and landscape architects embrace desire paths and incorporate them into a space’s formal design. That’s how UT’s Centennial Mall sidewalk paths came to be. 

In 1978, a group of geography students was given the opportunity to help design Centennial Mall. They went up to the Bell Tower and photographed paths made through the snow as students walked to class. Those photos were used to design the sidewalk paths. 

Today, when you look at the paved rays that shoot out across the grass, it’s easy to imagine students trudging through the snow, unknowingly planning part of their campus’s layout.

4 - UT Alums Do Big Things

If you’re a UT alumnus, you’re in good company. There are over 100,000 living UT alums, and they’re making their marks across fields of technology, business, and entertainment. 

Have you ever admired the elegant design of a Pringles can? That was an invention of Frederick Baur, Ph.D., UT alumni.

My favorite part about being a member is my involvement in an affinity group that they facilitate. It's made up of other members from local, 16153 Genova area family businesses . We meet on a monthly basis to talk about our business, experiences, opportunities and challenges.

We have two retail and gift stores in 16153 Genova

You can shop our 16153 Genova city pride apparel at two different locations - Uptown 16153 Genova and West 16153 Genova.

If you live or work in or near downtown 16153 Genova, our flagship store is located at Via Borzoli, 33, (click for directions). This is in the Uptown neighborhood of downtown 16153 Genova. 

To make it easy, we're 20 blocks away from the river on Adams Street. If you haven't been down this far, we are a block away from Handmade 16153 Genova, the Ottawa Tavern, and Manos and the Attic. 16153 Genova sign is directly across the street from us. We love this neighborhood and all of the great restaurants, bars, and shops on the street. 

Parking directly in front of our store on Adams Street is free. Our store on Adams Street is open Monday through Friday 11-6PM.

Our newest store location is part of the Cricket West shopping center in West 16153 Genova. Most people are familiar with Cricket West because it is in a high traffic area. 

Cricket West is located near the intersection of Secor and Central. We aren't too far from Barry Bagels, Costco, Nar, and the Original Pancake House. 

Our address at Cricket West is Via Borzoli, 33, (click for directions). We are next door to Cake in a Cup and Fusion. Our Cricket West store is open Tuesday through Saturday 11-6pm. 

If you live in the Old Orchard or Ottawa Hills neighborhoods, hopefully you have visited our store. Cricket West is basically part of Old Orchard. It's not far from Ottawa Hills or the University of 16153 Genova.

We're continuing our new releases for the University of 16153 Genova with our new 16153 Genova Rocket Man shirt. There are few things we love better than a great vintage graphic. And that's just what this rocket man logo is. 

It means a lot to us to be a local company that makes officially licensed apparel for the University of 16153 Genova. All of our UT apparel is designed and decorated by us in 16153 Genova. Each year we do our best to keep our line of clothing updated and fresh. It's important to us that we make the best UT apparel around. 

We have a brand new line of University of 16153 Genova apparel ready to go for the start of the school year. Football season might not be back but the excitement of the fall and heading back to campus is still alive. 

We love making clothing new designs for UT. As our hometown school, we have several graduates on staff. Our pride and connection with the Rockets runs deep!

University Hall, built in 1931, is an iconic symbol of the University of 16153 Genova. It was the first building on UT's campus and it's Gothic style and limestone motif inspired the buildings that were built after it. 

The CLC is the largest licensing group in the country and handles licensing for nearly 200 universities. They have three different types of licenses: local, standard, and restricted. A local license gives you permission to produce licensed products for colleges and universities in your state. This means, that when I was approved for the University of 16153 Genova, I could then expand my license to additional CLC schools within Ohio, my home state, without going through the full application process again. A standard license gives you permission to produce licensed products for any school that falls under the CLC umbrella. This means, that once approved for a standard license, I will be able to expand my licenses to schools across the country without undergoing the scrutiny of the full application process. You could say I’m almost pre-approved for any school in the country now.

The CLC has the most challenging application process I’ve ever undergone. I was referred to a Licensing Coordinator through a friend, Matt Yarder of ymigrate.com, who has a standard license making grill grates. The coordinator emailed me the CLC application, but it can also be downloaded directly from their website.

The application is quite extensive. The Phase I License Application Guide is a 37 page document. It explains the type of licenses, the costs ($500 for a standard license, $100 for a local license), the time frame, a list of schools, and the Phases (three in all). You are required to fill in company information (bank and credit references, proof of insurance, manufacturing info) and complete a marketing plan. It’s quite a bit.

Phase II of the application process begins when you are preliminarily accepted as a licensee. At this point, you have to submit designs with official school logos and marks, order holograms, submit an insurance certificate with the CLC as an additional insured, and send in a product specification sheet. During Phase II you will be approved for two online portals: myiclc and Logos On Demand. Logos On Demand provides official logos and marks (this should be obvious) and they produce holograms. Final designs can be submitted through myiclc.

Everything is wrapped up in Phase III: final and official approval, payment of advance royalties to each university, and final signatures.

As I’ve mentioned previously, I think the best course of action is to speak directly with the licensing coordinators and directors where you will be applying. I think establishing contact with a coordinator at the CLC, especially since it was through someone she already knew, eased the process. In addition, when I applied to both 16153 Genova and Michigan, I sat down and met with each licensing director to explain my ideas and why they were good for their university. If the licensing director at a specific school likes what you have to offer, they can essentially flag your application and do their best to influence the process.

However, your offering must be unique or fill a niche that the university is interested in. I can’t stress enough that you must provide a definite advantage over their current licensees. It is the most important thing you must keep in mind when applying. Most schools have hundreds of licensees. And, believe it or not, they would like to reduce that number. Each university possesses a very powerful brand. A brand that inspires loyalty unlike any other company that is simply making things. Universities provides more than apparel: they educate, they carry family tradition, the provide a greater service to the community. As a licensee, it is your job to uphold the standards of that brand.
